Position Overview
North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is a historically Black university located in Durham, North Carolina. We are seeking a Student Counselor to join the Counseling Center within the Division of Student Affairs. This role focuses on providing counseling services and support to our diverse student body, supporting their academic and personal development, and contributing to a campus environment that promotes student well‑being.
Primary Purpose of Position Provide individual and group counseling for a variety of personal, social, educational and vocational concerns; offer psychoeducational workshops such as study skills, assertiveness training and stress management; conduct client assessment; develop and present outreach programs; provide crisis intervention and management, including on‑call rotation; provide student advocacy and referrals to community agencies; consult faculty and staff on student issues; supervise graduate practicum students and interns; participate in professional development; and perform related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Advanced experience and knowledge of individual and group counseling methods and procedures.
Knowledge of principles of program development, consultation, outreach, crisis intervention and management.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, administrators and parents.
Knowledge of developmental characteristics of late adolescence and young adulthood and unique difficulties confronting students at these stages.
Commitment to multicultural competencies and experience with group counseling and gender/sexuality issues.
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
Minimum Education and Experience Master’s degree required (doctorate preferred) in counseling, clinical psychology, social work or a related field from an accredited institution, with completed clinical practicum and internship. Experience in case management and interaction with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population is required.
Licenses or Certification Fully licensed or eligible for full licensure in the State of North Carolina upon hire if transferring an unencumbered license from another state. Consideration for sport psychology/counseling and performance consultation with clinical experience if not fully licensed.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Provide individual and group counseling for personal, social, emotional, educational, and vocational concerns.
Offer psychoeducational workshops and presentations on topics such as social anxiety, assertiveness training, and stress management.
Provide crisis intervention and management, including on‑call rotation and emergency support for campus crises.
Consult faculty and staff on student issues, applying knowledge of developmental characteristics and multicultural competencies.
Advocate for students, making referrals to community agencies and university departments as needed.
Fulfill administrative duties such as serving on university committees and providing updates during staff meetings.
Supervise graduate practicum students and interns in accordance with program standards.
Participate in professional development activities to maintain current knowledge and skills.
Other duties as assigned.
