Job Description The First-year Research Immersion (FRI) program invites applications for a three-year renewable, full‑time Research Assistant Professor (also known as Research Educator) position to begin January 2026 (preferred) or August 2026. This 10‑month, non‑tenure track faculty role combines teaching and research to empower faculty to grow as research educators, leaders, mentors, and higher education professionals. The position focuses on Microbial Biofilms in Human Health, requiring a terminal PhD in microbiology or a related field.
The Research Educator will guide first‑ and second‑year student cohorts (~30 per cohort) through authentic research experiences, develop and implement course curriculum, collaborate with the Binghamton Biofilm Research Center, and maintain an active research program.
Responsibilities
Serve as instructor for FRI courses (Fall, 6 credits: FRI Semester 1 & 3 courses; Spring, 4 credits: FRI Semester 2 course) and hold weekly lab hours to mentor student teams.
Continuously develop, maintain, and revise the stream curriculum.
Supervise, train, and manage undergraduate peer mentors (UGPMs).
Maintain research laboratory and budget; perform research in conjunction with students.
Collaborate with faculty and external collaborators on research projects; disseminate results.
Participate in FRI program events and committees; support students in post‑FRI activities.
Attend and actively participate in FRI faculty/staff meetings; facilitate assessment of the research stream and FRI students.
Actively engage in research and educational professional development.
Qualifications
PhD in microbiology or related field (molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, immunology, etc.) by August 1, 2026.
Demonstrated expertise in biofilms theme (microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, immunology, etc.).
Advanced experimental design and technical skills aligned with the research stream.
Effective communication skills; ability to manage multiple priorities with high organization and efficiency.
Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively.
Professional and organizational skills; problem‑solving, prioritization, and task management.
Ability to analyze and organize information for a variety of research projects.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD in microbiology or related field by January 1, 2026.
Minimum of two years of teaching experience in higher education, including as a teaching assistant.
Experience mentoring undergraduate researchers and supervising undergraduate/graduate teaching assistants.
Experience managing a research laboratory.
