Summary
National Power is accepting applications to fill a Generator Service Technician opening in our San Jose, CA, market. Under the general direction of and reporting to the Service Manager, the Generator Service Technician is responsible for the maintenance and repair of generator sets and other electrical equipment.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Perform various types and levels of maintenance and repair on generators and parallel systems ranging from 5-5000 kW. Troubleshooting and repair of Automatic Transfer Switches, including bypass isolation and closed transition types. Repairs include performing preventative maintenance service (oil and filters), troubleshooting AC and DC circuits, removing and replacing components as necessary, performing warranty work per manufacturer’s guidelines, and performing start-up/commissioning on new generators and generator systems.
Perform diesel or gaseous engine troubleshooting and repair, including ignition components, injection systems, valve adjustments, etc.
Perform load bank testing on generator(s) to ensure units are in the proper operating conditions and meet applicable code requirements.
Assist other technicians with large multi‑person jobs or troubleshooting complicated issues.
Education And Experience
HS Diploma required; Associate degree in an electrical/mechanical related field preferred.
Current Generac Power Systems certification preferred.
US Air Force Electrical Power Production Specialist, US Navy Electrician’s Mate, or Generator and/or UPS field service technician preferred.
Skills And Other Qualifications
Excellent communication skills, able to give verbal/written reports of job status, repair recommendations, equipment/supplies needed.
Ability to account for time spent on jobs and travel.
Excellent driving record and valid driver’s license. Job will require driving long distances to job sites and overnight stays in hotels (1–3 nights, occasionally more).
Good computer skills and comfortable with Microsoft software (Internet Explorer, Word, Excel, Adobe PDF).
Will work from home while ensuring proper vehicle maintenance, inventory management, and security of company property (cell phone, laptop, specialty tools, etc.).
Manage difficult or emotional customer situations; respond promptly to customer needs; solicit feedback; meet commitments.
Problem‑solving during emergency situations or limited resource scenarios.
Training will be provided; may attend training courses in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and other locations as required.
Demonstrate accuracy, thoroughness, continuous improvement, quality, safety monitoring.
Work Conditions
Required to work in various weather conditions (heat, rain, snow, high humidity, etc.).
Frequently work near moving mechanical parts.
Physical Demands
Lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 75 lb.
Ascending or descending ladders, scaffolding, stairs, ramps.
Operational use of hands, arms, etc.
Entering text or data on a computer.
Pushing/pulling with hands, feet as needed.
Moving on hands, knees, or feet to enter restricted spaces.
Operating machinery controls (pedals, buttons, levers).
Clear vision for small objects or print, including computer use.
Sitting for long periods.
Occasional movement in confined spaces.
Compensation
Competitive pay based on experience and certifications; overtime paid at 1.5× base. Performance‑based pay structure.
Three weeks of paid vacation after 90 days (first year pro‑rated).
