Senior Controls Engineer – Industrial Automation

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Controls Engineer to join our team in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This position offers an exciting opportunity to lead automation projects for a wide range of industries, including Semiconductor, Life Sciences, Building Automation, Food and Beverage, Oil and Gas, Mining, and Water or Wastewater.
The Senior Controls Engineer will be responsible for developing, programming, and commissioning advanced control systems, while also providing technical leadership to engineering teams. This is a client-facing position that requires excellent communication skills, strong technical expertise, and the ability to lead automation design from concept through completion.
Key Responsibilities
Design and implement innovative automation systems and control strategies for industrial processes and equipment
Develop control system architecture, select appropriate hardware and software components, and produce detailed documentation and schematics
Program and integrate PLC, DCS, RTU, and HMI or SCADA systems to meet client requirements
Commission and test systems on-site to ensure optimal performance and reliability
Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians
Manage project timelines, budgets, and deliverables to ensure client satisfaction and profitability
Collaborate with customers to identify automation requirements and develop technical specifications
Troubleshoot field devices, control panels, and electrical systems up to 480VAC
Prepare estimates, proposals, and design documentation
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Computer Science required
Ten or more years of professional experience as a Controls Engineer in industrial automation
Proven experience designing, programming, and commissioning systems using PLC, DCS, HMI, and SCADA platforms
Expertise with PLC hardware and software, including Rockwell Automation, Siemens, and Modicon
Experience with HMI and SCADA platforms such as ICONICS Genesis64, Wonderware ArchestrA System Platform, GE CIMPLICITY, GE iFIX, and FactoryTalk View
Knowledge of DCS systems such as Emerson DeltaV or equivalent
Strong understanding of industrial networking and communication protocols such as Ethernet IP, Profinet, and Modbus
Proficiency in controller programming languages such as Ladder Logic, Sequential Function Chart, and Structured Text
Experience with programming languages such as VBA, .NET, and SQL for HMI or SCADA development
Familiarity with data visualization and analytics tools such as Power BI and Grafana
Experience leading technical teams and managing engineering projects
Ability to read and design electrical schematics and control panels following NEC standards
Must be local to Albuquerque or have strong ties to the area
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with AutoCAD for control system design
Hands‑on experience with fiber, wired, and wireless industrial communication systems
Background in Semiconductor, Life Sciences, or Manufacturing automation environments
