Economist, Social-Economic Impact (Base in Beijing)

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is a multilateral development bank whose mission is financing infrastructure for tomorrow in Asia and beyond. It has a regional focus on green, technology-enabled, and connectivity-enhancing projects. Founded in 2016, AIIB now has 110 approved members worldwide and is capitalized at USD 100 billion.

The Economics Department of AIIB has three key responsibilities: (a) strengthen the development of projects and policy‑based lending, (b) develop thought leadership on infrastructure and development finance, and (c) build the Bank’s external practice ecosystem to complement internal capacity. It leads the Bank’s economic analysis and provides flagship research.

Responsibilities

Work closely with other departments to integrate social and inclusive dimensions, including climate change and nature, into project design and policy‑based lending operations.

Conduct economic analysis on health, poverty, inequality, labour markets, social protection, and gender to inform appraisal, monitoring, and impact assessment.

Collaborate across departments to further AIIB’s gender and economic inclusion agenda.

Support research and thought leadership on socioeconomic issues and their intersection with climate change and nature, through flagship reports, policy briefs, and technical reports.

Assist the Ecosystem head with outreach, events, stakeholder engagements, and external research ecosystem building.

Provide research and stakeholder engagement support to the Chief Economist on D&I matters, economic inclusion, and gender economics.

Represent the Bank in technical discussions and policy forums related to health, poverty, inequality, labour markets, social protection, and gender.

Requirements

Advanced degree (PhD or Master’s) in economics, development economics, public policy, or related fields with a focus on social development, poverty analysis, health economics, or social protection.

Minimum 5–7 years of relevant experience in large international organizations, universities, research institutions, think‑tanks, consultancy, or financial institutions.

Expertise in development economics or related disciplines (health economics, inclusion economics, sustainable development) and experience in project‑level socioeconomic assessments, cost‑benefit analysis, or related work.

Academic research record in development economics or policy-relevant publications is a plus.

Proven application and track record of professional expertise in publications, policy analysis, or contributions to development operations and economic analysis of social aspects of development and/or infrastructure programs and projects.

Knowledge of social and economic challenges in developing and emerging economies.

Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and in a team, and to handle tight deadlines in a multicultural environment.
