Job Description POSITION: STRUCTURAL STEEL PAINTER / LABORER
LOCATION: Lake Orion
OBJECTIVE The Structural Steel Painter/Laborer is an hourly/non-union position that plays a vital role in supporting Commercial Contracting Corporations fabrication and yard operations. This position is responsible for painting structural steel using airless spray equipment, handling materials with forklifts and overhead cranes, and assisting with general labor duties within the shop and yard. The ideal candidate is hands‑on, safety‑conscious, and capable of working independently in a fast‑paced environment.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES Operate airless paint sprayers to apply coatings to structural steel components. Safely operate forklifts and overhead cranes to load, unload, and move materials in and out of the paint shop. Maintain paint sprayers, tools, and all painting‑related supplies. Ensure proper surface preparation and application of paint according to project specifications.
Shop & Yard Support:
Load and unload trucks with tools, equipment, and materials. Pull, inspect, and inventory tools and materials for job sites. Clean and maintain the shop, including equipment and work areas. Dump trash hoppers and assist with general building maintenance (indoor and outdoor). Provide general labor support across departments, including assisting fabricators when needed. Pick up and drop off tools or equipment as directed.
CORE COMPETENCIES Experience with airless paint sprayers. Experience operating forklifts and overhead cranes. Ability to work independently with attention to detail and safety. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Basic knowledge of small electrical tools and small gas engines. Strong organizational skills with accurate paperwork handling. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs regularly. Chauffeur’s license and current DOT medical card. Must participate in company drug screening program. Prior painting experience in a structural steel or industrial setting strongly preferred. OSHA safety awareness is a plus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Fast‑paced, active environment with frequent interruptions. May work outdoors in various weather conditions. Potential exposure to fumes, airborne particles, vibration, and chemicals. Occasional work at heights or in potentially hazardous conditions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to stand, walk, lift, and operate equipment for extended periods. Must be able to follow safety protocols and verbal/written instructions precisely. Capable of working both independently and as part of a team.
