The Chemist II performs an essential role in the Gas Chromatography (GC) department by providing analytical services and results accurately, efficiently, and promptly to clients through: Analyzing samples using GC, conventional, MS, MSMS, and other detection techniques, proposing improvements, stabilizing analytical processes, and contributing to innovation to achieve the company's mission and objectives
Duties and Responsibilities Sample Analysis
Operate GC instrumentation with conventional, MS, and MSMS detection
Utilize Agilent MassHunter and OpenLAB CDS to analyze, interpret, and report test results
Enter data into LIMS and take responsibility for results
Independently perform simple and complex analyses for routine and non-routine samples
Schedule activities to provide accurate and timely service
Ensure samples are extracted and analyzed according to validated methods
Maintain and document reference materials and working standards
Compile and maintain Internal Quality Control data
Work safely with awareness of chemical hazards
Instrument Maintenance & Troubleshooting
Troubleshoot issues with analytical procedures
Perform routine and preventative maintenance, verification, and calibration of GC instruments
Coordinate with Chemist 3 or Group Leader on the resolution of complex issues
Documentation & Quality Assurance
Develop and update controlled documents and SOPs
Perform secondary review on data packages (as directed)
Ensure ISO17025 compliance
Method Development & Improvement
Develop improved and/or new methodology using published sources
Contribute to the continuous improvement of laboratory operations
Propose and implement changes to improve quality and efficiency
Knowledge & Professional Development
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of analytical techniques and technologies
Participate in internal and external training
Attend professional and technical meetings as assigned
Team Support & Mentoring
Train and mentor chemists within the department
Support and provide assignments for Chemist 1 (as directed)
Assist Chemist 3 in R&D projects
Position Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree (B.S. or B.A.) in Chemistry or related science
At least one year of experience with GC instrumentation (conventional, MS, MSMS detectors)
Experience in analyzing and producing data packages
Practical working knowledge of analytical software (Agilent MassHunter, OpenLAB CDS)
Experience collaborating with different business departments
Familiarity with commercial fast-paced laboratory environments
Ability to handle multiple priorities and deadlines
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Clear technical communication (oral and written)
High emotional intelligence
Cultural awareness and effective diverse communication
Proficiency in MS Office and Adobe Acrobat
Strong mathematical skills, including statistical analysis
Excellent reasoning ability
Preferred
3+ years of experience with GC-MS and GC-MSMS instrumentation
3+ years of experience with analytical method development
3+ years of experience with Agilent software platforms
3+ years analyzing large-scale pesticide panels (>100 compounds)
Experience with the QuEChERS extraction technique
Experience with sample processing and extraction method development
Experience with high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS/TOF)
Experience mentoring and training others
Experience in international businesses
