As a Lead Engineer – Mechatronics in the Aero Thermal Mechanical Systems organization, you will play a key role in inventing and maturing the mechanical solutions that enable new manufacturing, inspection, and repair capabilities for GE Aerospace and our customers. In this hands‑on role, you will lead the design, analysis, prototyping, and testing of novel solutions that will have a direct impact on our ability to deliver our products to our customers and to keep them in revenue service.

Job Description Essential Responsibilities:

The primary responsibility of the Lead Engineer – Mechatronics is to lead and execute projects focused on mechanism design coupled with electromechanical, pneumatic, or hydraulic actuation for advanced confined space access, inspection, and repair, or other novel aerospace system applications. Additional responsibilities include:

Lead and/or participate on multidisciplinary teams of GE Aerospace Research colleagues, GE Aerospace Services team members, and external partners to invent, shape, and mature new technology for confined space access, inspection, and repair

Execute the design, analysis, system integration, testing and maturation of novel mechanisms that may include sensors, end effectors, controllers, and actuation

Develop and mature design or analysis tools for advanced mechanisms or mechatronic systems

Provide expert consultation to help resolve technical challenges across the organization

Foster a culture rooted in the GE Aerospace behaviors: respect for people, continuous improvement, and customer driven

Contribute to the development and maintenance of technology roadmaps

Work with other support functions and/or external suppliers to meet project deliverables

Prepare and participate in project and technical reviews

Lead the development and writing of internal and external proposals

Build an external network of collaborators in academia, government, and industry

Patent inventions and develop a record of publication via conferences and peer‑reviewed journals

Qualifications This Lead Engineer – Mechatronics role requires a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, or Applied Mechanics with a minimum of 3 years of industrial experience, or an MS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, or Applied Mechanics with a minimum of 6 years of industrial experience. Additionally, the role requires:

Experience in developing novel mechanisms, including electro‑mechanical systems, actuators, and/or sensors and end effectors

Proficiency in using 3D solid modeling software (e.g., NX, SOLIDWORKS, Creo) and prototyping

Analytical experience, including structural/thermal finite element analysis with ANSYS

Experience in simulation of kinematics and dynamics of mechanisms and electromechanical systems

Results‑oriented execution mindset with a sense of urgency

Ability to work under pressure and meet aggressive deadlines

Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team and to interface with senior leaders and customers with clarity and confidence

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in a global team environment

Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY

Desired Characteristics

Experience developing confined space access tools and mechanisms

Testing experience of electromechanical components and systems, data acquisition (DAQ, LabVIEW), and design validation

Familiarity with Non‑Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques, such as ultrasonic testing, eddy current, FPI, camera optics, X‑ray and others

Familiarity with engineering with diverse engineering materials including plastics, elastomers, composites and metals

Familiarity with surface engineering and repair processes such as material removal techniques, coating application and cleaning

Familiarity with electrical circuit design and troubleshooting

Familiarity with principles of product development, reliability and quality control

Experience developing technical ideas with internal/external customers and a track record of converting ideas to programs

Direct knowledge of aerospace power and propulsion applications

The base pay range for this position is $90,000 – $175,000 USD annually. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary. This posting is expected to close on November 26th, 2025.
