Research Scientist I, Molecular Genetics and Genomics Division About NEB

New England Biolabs® (NEB) is a global leader in enzyme discovery for molecular biology. Founded in 1974, we are a community of scientists, innovators, and collaborators dedicated to advancing science for the benefit of society. NEB’s reagents are trusted worldwide for their quality and reliability and have played a critical role in breakthroughs across genomics, proteomics, diagnostics, and academic research.

The Role NEB invites applications for a Research Scientist I position within the Molecular Genetics and Genomics Division. The successful candidate will develop and implement innovative strategies for mining microbial communities to discover and characterize novel enzymes, focusing on high‑throughput sequencing and molecular biology methods.

Develop and apply next‑generation sequencing (NGS) strategies to identify and characterize enzymes from complex microbial communities.

Design and execute experiments that integrate molecular biology, microbiology, and genomics to support enzyme discovery efforts.

Analyze and interpret sequencing data to guide experimental decisions and generate hypotheses.

Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists in computational biology, molecular genetics, and protein biochemistry.

Present research findings through internal reports, cross‑functional meetings, and scientific publications.

Contribute to the continuous improvement of workflows, protocols, and analytical pipelines.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Genomics, Biochemistry, or a related field with at least 2 years of postdoctoral experience.

Demonstrated expertise in NGS technologies and applications.

Strong background in molecular biology techniques (e.g., cloning, library preparation, nucleic acid manipulation).

Proven ability to design, execute, and analyze complex experiments independently.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Strong problem‑solving ability, curiosity, and motivation to work in an interdisciplinary environment.

What Will Make You Stand Out

Experience with metagenomics, microbiome analysis, or enzyme discovery pipelines.

Familiarity with bioinformatics tools for analyzing NGS data.

Track record of scientific publications and/or patents.

Experience mentoring or supervising students, interns, or research staff.

Estimated base salary hiring range: $81,000 – $95,000.
