Job Summary The Texas Workforce Commission is looking for attorneys or law school graduates to serve as Hearing Officers for unemployment hearings. Applicants must be Texas residents or willing to relocate to Texas.

Working knowledge of court proceedings is required, including testimony, exhibits, and decision writing based on law, policy and precedents.

The role requires maintaining a reliable schedule, weekly meetings, collaboration via Microsoft Teams, and may be performed from any city in Texas.

Who We Are The Appeals Department holds hearings for first‑level appeals related to unemployment insurance benefits, guided by the Texas Unemployment Compensation Act.

What You’ll Do The Hearing Officer I conducts formal hearings across the state, performing routine work under moderate supervision with limited independent judgment.

You Will Be Trusted To

Conduct telephone hearings on entitlement to UI Benefits in accordance with Federal and Texas Law.

Confer with agency personnel, clarify future implications, question witnesses, rule on motions and admissibility of evidence, and adjudicate benefit eligibility issues.

Render decisions affirming, modifying, or reversing previous rulings based on testimony, claims records and applicable law.

Perform related duties as needed.

You Are a Great Fit With

Good organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple priorities while meeting strict deadlines.

Experience holding Unemployment Insurance Appeal Hearings.

Licensed attorney in any U.S. court.

Proficiency with computers and office software.

You Qualify With

Graduation from an accredited ABA‑approved law school.

Two years of full‑time experience as a hearing officer conducting Unemployment Insurance benefits entitlement hearings in Texas or another state (experience may substitute for education in eligible cases).

What You’ll Earn

Salary: $4,700.00‑$4,982.00 per month.
