Adult Protective Investigator

How you will make an impact This professional position investigates allegations of abuse, neglect, self‑neglect and financial exploitation against vulnerable adults and mitigates the risk factors involved. Clients served include community residents and those in alternative care facilities. Your role is to ensure their safety and independence.
What you will do
Investigate allegations of abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation and prevent reoccurrence.
Meet with the vulnerable adult within 24 hours of receiving a report to assess safety and mental capacity.
Coordinate emergency services—medical evaluations, temporary placement, and court intervention—when the person cannot make decisions for themselves.
Gather critical information through interviews, observations, and analysis of criminal history, prior APS involvement, and records uncovered during investigations.
Collaborate with state agencies, law enforcement, prosecutors, and community partners to provide justice and wrap‑around services.
Build relationships with advocacy groups, medical personnel, and other community resources.

Qualifications
A high school diploma or GED and four years of law‑enforcement experience or active military service (honorably discharged or equivalent).
OR an associate degree or 60+ college credits and two years of professional work experience (examples listed below), two years of law‑enforcement experience, or active military service.
OR a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
Examples of professional work experience include investigations, family support, behavioral health, nursing roles, emergency medical services, and other high‑stress environments requiring critical decision‑making.
Additional Requirements
Valid driver’s license and operational private vehicle; proof of registration and insurance within 30 days of hire.
Ability to attend a 6‑8 week mandatory training course.
Night, weekend, and holiday work is required; position is essential.
Exposure to hazardous conditions in the field may occur.
Background Screening Requirement All candidates must complete state and national criminal history checks. Employment may be terminated if disqualifying offenses are found after hire.
Selective Service Male candidates born on or after October 1, 1962, must be registered with the Selective Service System before 26 or hold an exemption letter. Verification occurs prior to hire.
