Job Description: Under general supervision, responsible for safe piloting and navigation of a fire boat in response to fire alarms, emergency incidents, public service activities, training, and other vessel‑support activities. Maintains equipment, logs, and records; ensures safety standards; performs related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: This role is distinguished from H110 Marine Engineer, focusing exclusively on piloting and navigation.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervises boat crew.
Major, Important, and Essential Duties
Operates the vessel’s pilot house and bridge equipment while responding to an emergency or service.
Takes helm, gives engine orders, and operates propulsion controls, radar, compass, radio, and other navigation equipment.
Navigates the fire boat in all weather conditions and at all hours of the day in response to all calls requiring support.
Participates in fire suppression duties as necessary.
Maneuvers fire boats to enable crew effectiveness in fighting fires and protecting life and property.
Takes effective damage control measures in case of casualty or emergency.
Inspects fire boats and equipment, performs or arranges required maintenance.
Participates in cleaning, scaling and painting duties; performs minor repairs and alterations to topside areas.
Maintains up‑to‑date log books and other records in accordance with regulations.
Ensures all personnel aboard adhere to safety standards.
Participates in inspections of occupied and unoccupied buildings and other structures in the Bay for fire suppression planning purposes.
Qualifications Minimum qualifications required at the time of application filing.
Education: High‑school diploma or equivalency certificate (e.g., G.E.D., California High School Proficiency Certificate).
Experience: 10 years verifiable experience as master aboard commercial vessels; one year of experience within the last two years as master aboard commercial vessels.
License and Certification: Current 500‑gross‑ton license issued by the U.S. Coast Guard in any of the following categories: “Master’s license valid for ocean, coastwise, or inland,” “Master Freight and Tow,” or “Master (Operator), Un‑inspected Towing Vessels.” Must include radar endorsement and pass federally mandated random drug screening.
Desirable Qualifications (optional)
Recent experience maintaining and operating vessels on the San Francisco Bay and in its tributaries.
Recent experience operating tugboats and/or fireboats.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Navigation rules and regulations; safety procedures in hazardous conditions; seamanship; nautical terms; piloting and navigation instructions; tactical maneuvering of fire boats; aids and hazards of navigation in the Bay; local water characteristics; law compliance; communication systems; incident command system; and related knowledge.
Ability to operate and maneuver a fire boat in emergency situations at all weather and hours; work effectively with others; use equipment; make decisions under stress; communicate orally and in writing; maintain relationships; complete reports; and navigate using radar and radios.
Verification A copy of the current valid U.S. Coast Guard license must be submitted by 4:00 PM November 3, 2025 to DHR‑publicsafety@sfgov.org with “H120” in the subject line.
Selection Process Applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be screened; may be invited for a performance exercise. Final hiring decisions are made by the screening committee.
