Academic Services Professional – Learning Specialist (Position No. 617415). FLSA Exempt, Permanent, Full Time, 40 hours per week, 12-month period. Tenure‑Track.

Primary Function of the Unit The University College is designed to provide consistent, high‑quality and appropriate academic advising, monitoring, mentoring, nurturing and coaching to ensure students’ academic and personal success.
Primary Purpose of Position The Learning Specialist will provide assistance to academically at‑risk student‑athletes by developing, managing, implementing and monitoring a strategic study program. Responsibilities include providing mentors and tutors to at‑risk student‑athletes or those with learning‑impairing disabilities, assessing needs, and developing success plans.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Experience working with student‑athletes and demonstrated teaching expertise, especially utilizing a wide range of pedagogical resources; familiarity with NCAA, MEAC and NCCU rules and regulations is desired.
Knowledge of technology‑based software functionality to assist students.
Flexible schedule including evening and weekend work as needed.
Minimum Education / Experience Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required; Master’s degree, preferably in Education (or related field), is desired.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Identify student‑athletes’ skill sets and design/implement strategic instructional plans for at‑risk student‑athletes.
Engage small groups and individuals in the implementation of instructional plans.
Monitor effectiveness of instructional plans and develop/implement learning interventions and study strategies covering time management, critical thinking, reading and writing, note‑taking, test‑taking, etc.
Provide full‑range instructional activities, including individual and group tutoring in learning‑how‑to‑learn skills.
Provide professional training to SAASS staff and other campus academic support resources on strategies for this special population.
Identify and collect data that evaluates the effectiveness of available services; develop and maintain file resources related to study skills and learning strategies.
Monitor academic progress of student‑athletes with special needs and work in collaboration with their assigned SAASS staff; meet with prospective student‑athletes and families when requested.
Assist students with computer usage and collaborate with SAASS staff to implement the learning support program, ensuring a supportive learning environment for all student athletes.
Prepare reports as needed, serve on campus, local, regional and/or national committees, attend meetings, and perform other duties as assigned.
