Job Overview Salary Range: $95-105K
Perform metal work, body refinishing and paint restoration services on a broad range of high value classic Mercedes-Benz vehicles for VIP clientele. Master the repair process from start to finish, including fabricating custom sheet metal, restoring a complete body and frame, body refinishing and final paintwork, all to factory specifications and quality standards as a foundation for concours-level restoration.
Responsibilities
Use expert knowledge to evaluate vehicle body structural and paintwork condition, including discovery of sub-standard prior repairs on a diverse, multi-million-dollar range of classic Mercedes-Benz vehicles spanning decades.
Perform Repair Order estimation services for body and paintwork repair/restoration to determine a recommended best course of action for proper repair/restoration and sale to customer.
Develop and implement action plans to bring work to specified factory quality parameters and tolerances, even when no repair documentation is available.
Perform expert vehicle disassembly of irreplaceable components (doors, hoods, lids, trim, chrome, glass, wood, etc.).
Strip existing paintwork while preserving body/component integrity for restoration.
Analyze body structure after stripping to identify further repair needs and determine best course of action.
Conduct metal work on classic vehicles, including sheet metal fabrication, skin replacement, frame repair, and alignment of body/chassis components.
Perform finishing/body work, including fillers, contouring, sanding, fitment and gapping of doors, trunk, hood, rocker panels, and prep for paint.
Perform painting to match original finish, including color accuracy and surface finish quality; buff and final finish to show standards.
Maintain tracking of paint and materials to ensure efficiency and proper booking to Repair Orders.
Perform repair/restoration work within estimated labor times and collaborate with management for deviations.
Qualifications
Technical
– Minimum 10 years in fabricating, repairing, and restoring complex metal structures of vintage vehicles; mastery of traditional body/frame metal work and refinishing/paining high-value classic or custom vehicles with a portfolio of projects.
Body and Frame
– Ability to form complex body/structural components from raw materials (sheet metal/aluminum, brass, die cast, stainless steel, cast iron, bronze, copper) and to shape/fit repair-sized replacement panels; strong understanding of straightening systems and vintage metal construction techniques.
Paint and Refinishing
– Expert knowledge of restoration-grade refinishing, color matching without formulations, and use of water-based and solvent-based paints; knowledge of BASF/Glasurit or equivalent; understanding of fillers, sealers, primers and their compatibility; strong business-practice awareness in body shop restoration.
Must be able to read/interpret complex technical drawings/blueprints for body/frame specifications, dimensions and finish.
Process
– Perform repair/restoration efficiently and safely; document repairs with stories and photography; follow safety procedures for welding, grinding and hazardous materials.
Basic
– Active driver’s license; ability to work flexible hours including overtime and weekends; maintain organized and clean work environment; adhere to company/work rules.
