Departmental Overview The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life (the Magnes) is a museum and research center at UC Berkeley. It preserves a large, internationally important collection of Jewish art and artifacts and serves academic and public communities through research, teaching, and public programming. The Magnes collaborates with campus and community partners and is part of the Division of Arts and Humanities in the College of Letters and Science.
Position Summary The Magnes seeks a creative Senior Curator to work with the Executive Director to implement the museum’s mission and vision. The role requires a strong curatorial vision, collaboration, audience engagement, leadership, and expertise in Jewish studies and material culture to develop, manage, and interpret the Magnes’s collections for public and academic communities.

Responsibilities
Curatorial: lead collections-based activities including development and care, research, access, exhibitions, and policy development with a collaborative approach involving museum staff and external constituencies.
Plan and project-manage multifaceted exhibitions and installations, writing interpretive materials and catalogs.
Develop curatorial projects in collaboration with UC Berkeley faculty, students, academic programs, and courses.
Maintain leadership in Jewish studies or related academic fields and stay current with scholarship.
Stay up to date on best practices in collections preservation, presentation, interpretation, and audience engagement.
Participate in regional, national, and international networks, meetings, and conferences.
Leadership and Supervision
As part of the senior management team, contribute to short- and long-range institutional planning, programmatic vision, staffing, and policy development.
Partner with the Executive Director to lead the museum and represent the Magnes on campus and in broader communities.
Supervise and coach Collections and Curatorial staff, including professional staff and pre-professional employees.
Academic Relations
Deepen relationships with UC Berkeley undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff.
Collaborate with Learning & Engagement to support teaching and learning through collections-based programming.
Engage faculty, departments, and centers in collaborative initiatives to strengthen student engagement and faculty research.
Development and External Relations
Work with the Executive Director and Arts & Humanities Development Office to cultivate and steward donors and funders for collections and curatorial needs.
Serve as a spokesperson for the museum and collaborate with campus and community partners.
Staff advisory boards with the Executive Director and Marketing & Communications Manager; participate in fundraising events and grant writing; seek project sponsorships; cultivate gifts-in-kind.
Budget and Financial Operations
Develop and manage the annual Collections and Curatorial budget and project budgets for exhibitions.
Identify opportunities for ethical collections-based revenue generation.
Required Qualifications
Demonstrated deep knowledge of Jewish history, religion, cultures, and material culture with specialization in an area of the collection.
Ability to curate engaging exhibitions based on original research and relevant to museum audiences.
Knowledge of standard museum curatorial practices, collection development, connoisseurship, and ethical/legal standards for acquisition/deaccession.
Knowledge of conservation/preservation principles and ability to interpret material culture for diverse audiences.
Proven ability to conduct scholarly research and publish; strong people management and supervisory skills.
Donor cultivation and relationship-building skills; budget and project management abilities; strong communication and public speaking skills.
Ability to collaborate across constituencies and integrate curatorial activities with teaching, research, and public service missions.
Fluency in reading Hebrew; fluency or proficiency in Russian, Polish, Yiddish, Ladino, or another Jewish language is desirable.
Advanced degree in a related field or equivalent experience with extensive knowledge in Jewish studies and arts/museum administration.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience curating photographic collections and knowledge of the history of photography.
Salary & Benefits
Salary range information: The budgeted annual salary range is $112,400.00 – $214,000.00. This is a full-time, exempt, career position eligible for UC Benefits. Details available in the compensation and benefits guidelines.
