Position Summary Provide electrical design for medium voltage switchgear and power distribution systems up to 38kV, conduct technical analysis and/or resolution of electrical engineering problems, and provide technical support to other electrical engineers, designers, manufacturing plants, and field service teams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Design and develop electrical medium voltage switchgear and components using DFx.

Ensure designs comply with IEEE C37.20.2, IEEE 37.20.3, IEEE 37.20.7, IEC 62271-200, NEC, NEMA, UL and other applicable standards.

Perform electrical analysis and simulations (FEA) to validate designs.

Collaborate with mechanical engineers to integrate electrical and mechanical systems.

Create detailed electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.

Conduct DFMEA, prototype testing and validation as well as oversee high-voltage and high-power testing.

Support manufacturing and assembly processes and support PFMEA creation.

Participate in design reviews and provide technical guidance.

Design electrical one-line diagrams, proposals, specifications and drawings for medium voltage systems.

Select and design components considering cost, maintenance and reliability.

Possess strong understanding of medium voltage systems, switchgear and power distribution equipment.

Perform tasks associated with the design and engineering of automated switchgear, control systems for medium voltage electrical power systems in strict compliance with company engineering processes, quality procedures and design standards.

Prepare technical submittals to include layout drawings, sequence of operations, bill of materials, wiring schematics and test procedures to meet customer approvals.

Work with project management on scope of work and timelines for project completion.

Generate detailed design and drawing documents and parts list for manufacturing.

Write sequence of operation for automated control and transfer systems.

Generate Relay, PLC and HMI programs and update existing programs for automated control systems.

Stay technically acquainted with production methods, cost estimating procedures, new development technologies, materials, electrical components, etc.

Review electrical drawings and specifications in order to prepare submittals and project quotations that are on budget and on spec.

Maintain an excellent working relationship with customers, vendors and other departments within SAI.

Occasional weekend and/or evening work and travel to jobsites.

Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor as needed.

Regular in-person attendance is an essential function of this job.

Education and/or Experience

BS or master’s degree in electrical engineering with concentration in power engineering from an accredited engineering school required.

+3 years experience as an electrical engineer in medium voltage switchgear design.

Experience with live electrical power systems required.

Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of PQM and relays (SEL, Beckwidth, ABB, Basler, Schneider, Siemens, etc.)

Understand UL Standards, NEC, IEEE, IEC and NEMA Standards and their application to power distribution equipment.

Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics.

Understand electrical engineering including AC‑DC power system, instrument transformers, power distribution, controls, etc.

Ability to troubleshoot and resolve electrical issues during the design and testing phases.

Knowledge of electrical components.

Understand PLC and HMI programming software, Modbus, Modbus/TCP and other related control and communications protocols.

Self‑motivated and problem‑solving skills a must.

Familiar with CAD software tools and proficiency in Microsoft 365.

Articulate verbal and written communication skills required with the ability to prepare written specifications and review contractual documents.

Must be able to read, write and converse fluently in English with the level of competency that will permit the applicant to function in the position.

Physical Demands and Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.

Performance Standards

Quarterly reviews to measure key performance indicators (KPI’s) of on‑time, on‑budget and on‑spec with projects.

Attainment of quarterly goals established between supervisor and incumbent.
