Hardware Developer Engineer – Quantum Engineering, AWS CQC‑Fab

The Amazon Web Services (AWS) Center for Quantum Computing in Pasadena, CA is seeking a Hardware Development Engineer. The role requires expertise in semiconductor process development, particularly thin film deposition and etching techniques, to help AWS deliver cloud quantum computing services to its global customer base. Working inside and outside of the cleanroom environment in the device fabrication group, you will solve problems related to the fabrication and characterization of novel quantum processors.
Key Job Responsibilities
Develop, improve, and sustain fabrication processes.
Analyze in‑line metrology and electrical test data.
Interact with project leads to provide feedback that continuously improves the fabrication process.
Apply sound engineering principles and exhibit strong data‑analysis, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
Work effectively within a team environment.
Operate and maintain dry and wet etching tools (e.g., DRIE, ICP‑RIE) and metrology systems (e.g., optical profilometer, SEM).
Export Control Requirement Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be either a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum, or be able to obtain a U.S. export license.
Basic Qualifications
BS in physics, applied physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or related field.
3+ years of relevant industry experience (or equivalent lab experience in an MS or PhD program).
Expertise in one or more of the following thin‑film deposition processes and tools: CVD, PVD, etc.
Expertise in one or more of the following dry and wet etching processes and tools: DRIE, ICP‑RIE, wet‑etch, etc.
Experience with characterization tools.
Experience working on the mechanical, electrical, and/or vacuum systems of fabrication tools, e.g., as a tool owner.
Preferred Qualifications
BS degree in electrical engineering or equivalent.
Experience in the design of complex mechanical products and equipment at volume.
Good working knowledge in two or more of the following fabrication areas: MEMS, metal/dielectric thin‑film etching, process integration, electron/ion/x‑ray/scanning probe.
Basic programming skills (e.g., Python, Julia, MATLAB).
Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills.
Excellent communication and data‑presentation skills.
Effective teamwork with engineers, scientists, and technicians of varied technical levels.
