General Description PREP Research Associate – part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST supports collaboration with academic institutions on projects of mutual interest. This role requires a PREP award and involves technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.

Research Title Staff Scientist

Work Responsibilities

Serve as a molecular and cell biologist leading projects for the NIST Genome Editing Program and working with the genome editing team and stakeholders to develop and characterize measurement methods, control materials, and data analysis approaches toward the qualification of genome‑edited samples.

Lead, plan, and conduct research toward characterizing assays and reagents, developing genomic measurements, documentary standards, control datasets, and control materials for the field of genome editing as part of the NIST Genome Editing Program.

Lead development of wet‑lab procedures for new quantitative measurements of genome‑editing execution and outcomes in various mammalian cell systems.

Engage stakeholders, identify opportunities for assay development, assay qualification, control material development, and standards development.

Keep accurate and organized electronic records.

Organize and present results of the work in the form of reports, manuscripts, and oral presentations.

Qualifications

Minimum of a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Biology, Microbiology, or a related field.

Two (2) years of relevant experience.

Proficiency in molecular biology, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, DNA handling/assays, PCR, RNA handling, mammalian cell culture, DNA isolation, gel electrophoresis, and Illumina next‑generation sequencing.

Experience leading independent projects or teams.

Strong oral and written communication skills.
