Position Summary Responsible for all the Cement Mason duties on the Berkeley Campus, under the supervision of the Utilities Manager and Lead of the unit.
Responsibilities
Place and finish concrete, including color concrete surfaces and exposed aggregate.
Fabricate concrete beams, columns, and panels.
Mix and finish cement, lay brick and flagstone, set barriers and signs.
Make forms for small cement jobs and operate a concrete saw.
Assist other crafts on various tasks as assigned.
Operate heavy and light equipment such as bobcat, trucks, backhoe, and trenching machines.
Operate air compressors, jackhammers, rotary‑operated sump pumps, and tampers.
Clear and level ground, load and unload earth, hoist, and transport using equipment.
Level roadways and paths with hot asphalt for minor repairs.
Service and perform minor repairs on equipment.
Assist in underground excavation, digging, building fences, walls, and partitions, hauling wet concrete, and finishing concrete.
Handle hazardous waste safely and follow emergency procedures.
Execute all job assignments safely and in a timely manner.
Support maintenance projects and programmatic work assignments.
Keep accurate work records and complete paperwork promptly.
Serve as liaison with clients, relaying their needs to the appropriate department.
Adhere to all University and departmental safety guidelines and attend required training.
Handle other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Completed a five‑year apprenticeship program or equivalent experience/training.
Five years of comparable experience in a university, hospital, or large building complex.
Documented education and training in cement masonry.
Proficiency with craft techniques and tools for concrete placement and finishing.
Ability to access small or tight areas and work with ladders; lift up to 75 lbs.
Ability to operate heavy and light equipment and associated hand tools.
Strong communication skills and ability to interact positively with a diverse campus community.
Knowledge of applicable building codes, safety policies (EPA, IIPP, hazardous materials, etc.).
Ability to use a fitted respirator as required.
Availability to respond to emergencies, on‑call, weekend work, and rotating shifts.
Ability to handle equipment and supplies up to 100 lbs with or without accommodation.
Salary & Benefits The University of California, Berkeley offers a comprehensive benefits package and a competitive hourly rate (39.20 hours per week). Salary is based on experience and qualifications. This is a non‑exempt, biweekly‑paid, full‑time career position eligible for UC benefits.
