Position
Medical Instrument Technician (Echocardiography) – U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
Pay Range Base: $61,111.00 – $79,443.00 per year (actual pay based on experience)
Summary Cardiology Section of the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System. Echo technicians at this level identify and record anomalies indicative of disease or other medically significant condition from ultrasound imaging and simultaneous Doppler recordings. They incorporate findings into a plan of ultrasonic diagnostic examination.
Duties
Perform stress echocardiograms with and without pharmaceuticals, transthoracic examinations, and transesophageal examinations (including 3D TEE).
Conduct carotid duplex studies, peripheral venous and arterial studies, aorta studies, transcranial Doppler, vein mapping, hemodialysis access studies, and ankle‑brachial index with and without exercise.
Operate Holter monitors, attach and remove electrodes, and generate reports for physician review.
Operate EKG machines and coordinate with treadmill equipment and cardiac monitoring devices.
Maintain patient vitals and diagnostic information per established practices.
Generate study reports for physician signature.
Work at multiple locations within the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System (Slidell, Hammond, St. John, Baton Rouge).
Ensure productivity and adhere to departmental policies and guidelines.
Utilize Veterans Health Information and Technology Architecture (VistA) for documentation.
Perform office automation tasks (word processing, printing, e‑mail).
Qualifications
United States citizenship (non‑citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited).
No specific educational requirement; education may be substituted for experience at GS‑4 and GS‑5 levels.
Licensure or certification is not required but strongly desirable at GS‑6 or above; preferred certificates include Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS), Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (BCLS/ACLS).
1 year of experience directly related to the duties of the position, demonstrating required knowledge and skills.
Demonstrated technical KSAs in echocardiography services, regulatory knowledge (e.g., JCAHO), communication, supervision, and staff development.
Physical Requirements
May require standing, lifting, carrying, sitting, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing.
May require wearing personal protective equipment and annual TB screening.
Work is performed in an office/clinic environment with normal safety precautions.
