Job Summary : A Permits and Records Technician I processes and issues various permits to city residents and business owners in compliance with City, State and building codes and regulations. The work involves no supervisory duties and is performed under general supervision. Employees work a conventional office schedule and perform tasks that require minimal physical exertion, mainly sitting for periods of time.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or GED certification from an accredited institution.
Experience: Two years of office work, including one year processing permits.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of basic English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Knowledge of office management practices and procedures.
Knowledge of permit structures and requirements.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with inspectors, the public, and officials.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to type or keyboard clean copy at a specific rate of speed and accuracy.
Ability to understand and follow simple written or oral instructions.
Ability to deal courteously with employees at all levels of government, and work effectively with varying temperaments, both in person and by telephone.
Background Check : Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointments will be required to complete a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint authorization.
Probation : All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six‑month probation.
Eligibility : Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources regarding acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
Education Accreditation : Applicants’ education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained outside the U.S. must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
Selection Process : All candidates indicating the minimum qualifications on their applications will be placed on the eligible list without further examination. Each candidate’s training and experience will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity. Complete and accurate application information is essential.
Examination Process : Successful applicants will be placed on the employment certified eligible list for at least six months. The examination will consist of a rating of education, training, and experience as presented on the application and as they relate to the position. Supplemental questions may be required to assess specific knowledge, skills, and abilities.
NOTE : Applicants under final consideration will be required to authorize the release of criminal conviction information.
