Position Music Program Manager

Reports to Director of Education & Programs

Description The NEMPAC Music Program Manager reports to the Educational Programs Director and will work to support the growing music programs of NEMPAC’s Community Music School which include private music instruction, ensembles, and the adult music studio program. The manager collaborates with the Education Team (4‑5 staff members) on all Community Music School programming, communications, and daily operations. The manager will work to support the development, implementation, and management of NEMPAC’s music department offerings that include the private and group music instruction, the NEMPAC youth ensembles and the adult studio program. Most specifically, the role is expected to meet annual engagement goals related to the private music instruction program: focus on retention of current students in NEMPAC’s largest Educational Program, as well as seek to sustain and expand its current offerings. The role is expected to work in‑office at least 4 days/week.

What Does Success look like in this Role: (Metrics)

Students and families of all ages and abilities are actively engaged in the Private and Group Music Instruction pathway, and students understand the opportunity for growth within the program from Group Instruction to Private Instruction, and from beginner to advanced.

Regular check‑ins with faculty and families either in person in lessons and studios, or via phone to measure student success.

Develop and support a formalized referral process from group instruction to private instruction or next level of group instruction.

Completion of Annual Faculty Performance Reviews of approximately 25 faculty.

Expansion of NEMPAC Faculty, including but not limited to, diverse representation of musical genres and styles, artist ethnicity, gender, and racial backgrounds.

Execution and oversight of studio recitals (January and June) from the start of planning to the post‑event wrap‑ups, as well as seasonal community events and performance opportunities that showcase student musicians of all ages and abilities (open studios, masterclasses, fundraiser performances, seasonal tree lighting event concerts, etc.).

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Program Administration:

Cultivate a positive and supportive learning environment for students of all ages and skill levels, promoting a lifelong love of music.

Oversight of Private Music Instruction program, ensuring all students are properly matched with the best instructor and satisfied with their lessons, experience, and learning.

Plans and oversees curriculum, with special attention and focus on the group music instruction pathways to support student retention and growth dependent on their learning and artistic goals.

Prioritize accessibility of our students: oversee and facilitate accessibility needs of students, the collection of this information, and supporting the most inclusive and welcoming lesson space possible.

Works with the Education Team to plan the annual organizational calendar, including programs, session dates, performances, and special events.

Responsible for handling regular communication with all families and students enrolled in private, group and ensemble music programs at NEMPAC.

Enforces organizational policies and values.

Manages the current lesson schedule for continuing students.

Supports families with resources for lessons and recommendations for instruments or equipment to support learning.

Troubleshoots any problems or placement issues between student and faculty.

Develops creative ways to engage with families and students to strengthen instruction pathways within the music programs.

Executes a semester evaluation between student and faculty members, to track the measurable outcome of investment in lessons and student progress.

Coordinator of parent training workshops or student performance hours.

Other programs or projects as needed.

Participates in weekly Education Team Meetings with other staff members.

Other duties as assigned that pertain to music education programs.

Faculty Management:

Responsible for overseeing 18‑25 part‑time music department faculty across various programs with support from the Director of Education and Programs and Operations Manager.

Hiring and recruiting diverse and qualified music teachers that reflect NEMPAC values on DEIB and excellence in music education.

Reviews music instructors and provides feedback and guidance on teaching, including class observations.

Works with Education Team to uphold quality of programming and excellence in instruction, including observation hours and feedback sessions with instructors.

Works with Operations Manager to assign faculty teaching locations/sites/studios.

Performs annual review of faculty and schedules check‑points throughout the year.

Oversees and approves curriculum and program planning.

Supports materials, teaching supplies, music as needed for ensembles and group classes.

Community Outreach, Marketing & Events:

Plans and executes bi‑annual recitals for students with support from operations and outreach coordinator.

Organizes marketing efforts, including website updates and print programs for each recital.

Coordinates scheduling and event space with faculty and parents/students.

Plans separate adult and teen recital events in collaboration with Community Outreach Coordinator, cultivating relationships with NEMPAC’s Adult Studio students.

Supports annual Performathon fundraiser.

Helps recruit and spread the word to community members on all NEMPAC music events and programs.

Provides additional support at or in preparation for annual fundraising events, including coordination of student performances and determining performers/special features.

Coordinates NEMPAC participation in community events or special city‑wide performance opportunities, including open houses and school partner sites, holiday events, community parties, etc.

Qualifications:

Shared values in inclusivity and accessibility to arts programming for all.

2+ years of professional administrative experience required.

2+ years of experience with non‑profit arts administration preferred, but not required.

Suggested Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance or Music Education, and/or commensurate professional work experience and/or training.

Excellent organization and time management skills.

Ability to problem‑solve quickly.

Superior communication skills (writing and speaking).

Passionate about music education, especially NEMPAC’s mission.

Additional Information This is a part‑time position (25–30 hours per week), with the potential to become full‑time for candidates interested in also teaching at NEMPAC for approximately 10 additional hours per week. The role is based primarily in the office at least four days per week, with regular hours during peak programming times (2:00–6:00 p.m.) to support family and community engagement. Candidates must also be available to attend and assist with bi‑annual recitals in person.

This position pays $26–$30 per hour, commensurate with experience.
