Executive Underwriter / AVP, Underwriting Director – Energy, Oil, Gas & Chemicals
Zurich is hiring for an Executive Underwriter or AVP, Underwriting Director Energy, Oil, Gas & Chemicals for our National Accounts team in the Houston office.
This role will require you to be visible in the marketplace, meeting with agents and brokers, and be in the office/market three days per week. The role may also be hired remotely at the sole discretion of the hiring manager.
Responsibilities
Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, insurance laws and regulations, and rating annual rules.
Develop, maintain & collaborate with line of business representatives on referrals and other business‑related needs.
Provide guidance to lower level associates.
Develop and maintain relationships with distributors (agents & brokers) to support business retention and acquisition.
Determine insurance‑related needs of customers and distributors and provide solutions.
Serve as a help point for agents, brokers, and customers supporting the sales culture.
Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities.
Complete detailed opportunity assessments with key distributors to identify growth opportunities.
Qualify accounts in line with the organization’s appetite and sound business opportunity.
Make broker/customer and on‑site calls with a clear purpose.
Qualifications (Executive Underwriter)
High School Diploma or Equivalent.
5 or more years of experience in underwriting or market‑facing area.
OR 10 or more years in claims or underwriting support area.
OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with Associate Degree and 3+ years in underwriting or market‑facing area.
OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with Associate Degree and 8+ years in claims or underwriting support area.
Qualifications (AVP, Underwriting Director)
High School Diploma or Equivalent.
7 or more years of experience in underwriting or market‑facing area.
OR 14 or more years in claims or underwriting support area.
OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with Associate Degree and 5+ years in underwriting or market‑facing area.
OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with Associate Degree and 12+ years in claims or underwriting support area.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree.
Advanced knowledge of line or business.
Strong knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, national/local filing regulations, and guidelines.
Ability to assess risk effectively.
Team‑based work experience.
Knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
Strong presentation skills.
Compensation The combined salary range for this position is $98,500.00 - $215,000.00. The Executive Underwriter range is $98,500.00 - $165,000.00 with 15% short‑term incentive bonus. The AVP, Underwriting Director range is $130,000.00 - $215,000.00 with 20% short‑term incentive bonus.
Location Houston, Texas (AM) – Hybrid Work Schedule (office three days per week) or Remote (US) – Full Time. Sponsorship not offered.
