Prevention Training Specialist, HIV Testing APLA Health invites applicants to fill the Prevention Training Specialist role focused on HIV testing and counseling for Black MSM (Men Who Have Sex with Men) ages 18‑39 in Los Angeles, CA.

Position Summary Under the guidance of the Program Coordinator for the CDC Black MSM Program, the specialist will design, implement, monitor, and evaluate HIV testing and counseling services. Responsibilities include virtual, on‑site, and field‑based testing, navigation to care for newly diagnosed individuals, referral for STI screening and PrEP/PEP services, distribution of at‑home HIV test kits, and management of a social‑marketing strategy to raise awareness and recruitment. Accurate data entry into the CDC database underpins public health reporting and program compliance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provide virtual and on‑site HIV testing and counseling using OraQuick at‑home kits and Insti Rapid HIV tests, ensuring protocol compliance and documentation.

Navigate newly diagnosed clients to medical care, treatment, and support services; refer participants to the Out Here clinic for STI care and PrEP/PEP services.

Accurately input and manage HIV testing data in the CDC database, maintaining confidentiality and completeness.

Oversee shipping and distribution of Swab & Chill at‑home kits, tracking inventory and ensuring timely delivery.

Develop and implement a social‑marketing strategy to increase awareness and engagement in sexual health services via social media and community outreach.

Facilitate structured focus groups with 12–15 Black MSM (ages 18‑39) to explore sexual health, wellness, and community-specific experiences.

Collaborate closely with the Program Coordinator and evaluation team to support program objectives, maintain data integrity, and improve service delivery.

Adhere to HIPAA guidelines and confidentiality protocols protecting participant information.

Demonstrate strong time‑management skills, meeting deadlines, addressing participant needs, and adapting to program changes.

Build and maintain relationships within the Black MSM community to encourage participation in HIV testing and biomedical prevention services.

Requirements

Associate’s degree in a human services–related field or equivalent experience in HIV prevention, health education, or a related area.

At least one year of experience and/or active participation in the Black MSM community.

Preferred: HIV Counseling and Testing (HCT) certification from the Department of HIV and STD Programs (DHSP).

Experience developing social‑marketing campaigns, working in a nonprofit setting, and knowledge of HIV/AIDS–related health education.

Valid California driver’s license and proof of auto liability insurance (personal vehicle required for work‑related travel).

COVID‑19 vaccination and booster status as required by the organization.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of:

HIV prevention, STI screening, biomedical prevention strategies (PrEP/PEP, TasP), public health guidelines, harm reduction, social marketing principles, and virtual community engagement platforms.

Ability to:

work independently, manage multiple tasks, maintain accurate data entry, handle sensitive information with confidentiality, engage individuals in a culturally competent manner, communicate effectively in written and verbal formats, and present group sessions.
