The primary purpose of the Safety Specialist position is to provide technical expertise to resolve safety issues involving personnel, visitors, patients and other institutional staff and contractors. Performs and completes special projects as assigned or as needed to address institutional safety issues. Maintains awareness as assigned or as needed to address institutional safety issues. Maintains awareness with applicable laws, regulations and national guidelines relevant to section functions and responsibilities.
Complete environmental and safety policy review and development risk assessment, incident investigations, report writing and presentations to management to communicate risk and solutions. Assist in drafting comments on proposed state and federal regulations as needed. Duties may include functions in any or all of the following areas: Fire and Life Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Radiation Safety, Emergency Preparedness and Joint Commission, Environmental Protection, Construction Safety and Biological, Chemical and Laboratory Safety.
Ideal candidate will have Industrial Hygiene and environmental remediation/monitoring experience. Some specifics are air sampling, exposure monitoring, asbestos abatement, mold remediation, general safety knowledge. Mold consultant license a plus.

Program Support and Implementation

Pharmacy compliance sampling
Slip, trip, and fall hazard prevention program
OHS equipment maintenance, inventory, material handling
New OHS equipment evaluation
Inventory management and tracking
Other duties as assigned.
Education Required:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Applied or Basic Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Environmental Science or related field.
Preferred:
Advanced degree in Engineering, Applied or Basic Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Environmental Science or related field.
Work Experience Required:
None
Preferred:
Industrial Hygiene, environmental remediation or occupational safety.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
Texas Driver’s License Class A, B, or C (valid Texas driver’s license depending on the type and weight of vehicle to be operated and number of passengers).
