Opportunity Operational Risk Management (ORM) provides independent and objective oversight of risks arising from City National Bank’s business processes, people, systems, or external events. The Operational Risk Business Oversight (ORBO) team strengthens operational risk management in the first line of defense (1LOD) for CNB Technology and Innovation. The ORBO Manager 1 challenges the quality, sufficiency, and completeness of 1LOD operational risk practices against ORM Framework requirements, communicates outcomes, and supports improvement of the operational risk management framework.
What Will You Do?
Review and challenge operational risk practices against the CNB operational risk framework and policies, including 1LOD risk identification assessments, scenario analysis, Risk and Control Self Assessments (RCSAs), Key Risk Indicators (KRIs), material existing and emerging exposures, Operational Risk Events (ORE) reporting, and issue resolution.
Review and challenge controls implemented, providing feedback to risk and control owners and assessment teams on control identification, documentation, assessment approach, sample selection, operating effectiveness conclusions, and corrective action plans.
Review and challenge remediation initiatives to ensure control deficiencies are addressed, including issue management lifecycle, root cause analysis, action plans, and sustainability.
Understand material existing and emerging risks aligned with assigned business or corporate units to maintain risk appetite and representation of the operational risk profile.
Provide advisory, oversight, and challenge to 1LOD development of business processes, procedures, and controls to adhere to governance requirements.
Challenge 1LOD risk monitoring and reporting protocols, including metric trigger explanations and action plans.
Review and challenge self‑identified issues, escalation, issue ratings, corrective action plans, due dates, and thematic issues per the CNB Issue Management Policy.
Influence and monitor progress of action plans to improve the risk and control environment from assessments, monitoring, events, and regulatory exams.
Exercise high attention to detail in identifying, aggregating, and communicating issues and control gaps to appropriate stakeholders.
Ensure work is produced and documented with quality and content requirements.
Provide clear and transparent updates on assignment status.
Exercise independent judgment in identifying and assessing risk.
Prepare, review, and present challenge results to ORM Leadership, outlining risk of deficiencies.
Document and elevate observations and findings to appropriate leadership.
Communicate effectively and promote positive client relations with business line colleagues and management.
Maintain authoritative knowledge of laws, regulations, guidance, and policies for operational functions.
Maintain familiarity with assigned business units, activities, new product development, financial performance, and risk issues.
Act as an internal advisor to business and corporate units regarding the ORM framework, tools, policies, procedures, and reporting metrics.
Provide support during 2LOD audit and regulatory exam.
Execute additional departmental initiatives and other duties as assigned.
What Do You Need to Succeed? Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent.
Minimum 7 years of experience in the financial services industry.
Minimum 5 years of experience in risk management, technology risk management, compliance, or IT audit.
Minimum 3 years of IT control assurance experience.
Additional Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in computer science (concentration in info/cyber security), IT, accounting, auditing, or related professional qualifications such as CISA, CPA, CIA.
Strong business knowledge of financial services.
Understanding of Risk Management/Operational Risk Management and Technology Risk Management.
Strong knowledge of internal control management practices and testing methodology with proven experience in controls design and/or execution.
Strong knowledge of issue management practices with proven experience in issue resolution.
Ability to handle complexity and ambiguity.
Ability to deal effectively with conflict.
Well‑developed influencing, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
Ability to convey complex concepts in a clear and concise manner.
Ability to work independently with effective time and project management.
Strong interpersonal/teamwork skills.
Strong communication (verbal and written), negotiation, and presentation skills.
Demonstrated ability to think critically and facilitate change through collaborative effort.
Ability to work in a matrix environment.
Compensation Starting base salary: $99,000 – $176,000 per year. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location. This role is eligible for bonus and/or commissions.
