District Grounds Assistant 1 – South High (Mon‑Fri)

General Summary Under the general supervision of the District Grounds Athletic Crew Lead and/or the Athletic Grounds Manager, this position requires routine manual labor associated with grounds maintenance and performs various duties requiring moderate physical strength. This employee performs a variety of landscaping and grounds maintenance duties maintaining district campus grounds, high school complexes, and/or landscaped areas.
Essential Job Functions
Assists and performs maintenance and repair duties on district grounds (50%)
Assists in completing assigned marking and maintenance tasks associated with athletic, activity, and parking areas
Assists in completing assigned tasks associated with a prescribed snow removal program
Assists in completing tasks associated with the prescribed district‑wide beautification program
Assists in eliminating rodents
Assists in identifying and reporting needed grounds/exterior maintenance
Assists in laying sod, planting grass, and identifying turf problems
Assists in servicing, operating, and making minor repairs on all assigned grounds equipment
Assists in installing landscaping projects
Assists in preparing and maintaining softball, baseball, football, and soccer fields
Assists in repairing sprinkler systems
Checks and services power mowers, tractors, trimmers, and all landscaping equipment
Cleans drainage and other similar areas
Cultivates, fertilizes, and trims lawns, shrubs, hedges, trees, and ground cover
Mounts signs
Mows and edges turf grasses using hand and power equipment
Performs varied duties in planting, transplanting, fertilizing, and propagating ornamental plants
Sprays pesticides, special weed control, and other turf and lawn chemicals as required
Sprays shrubs, trees, weeds, and turf grasses
Sweeps walkways, picks up paper and rubbish, and empties garbage cans as required
Trims trees from ground using tree saw, chainsaw, and loppers
Uses hand tools to work soil and remove weeds, undergrowth, and debris from grounds and landscaped areas
Completes maintenance work orders as assigned (5%)
Performs operations associated with activities and special school functions inside the building (35%)
Possesses the ability to react to changing productive requirements and handle other essential tasks as assigned (10%)
Marginal Job Functions
May perform general exterior custodial duties seasonally or incidental to grounds‑keeping activities
May dig post holes and trenches
May install sign posts
May perform minor asphalt repair work
Performs minor fence repair
May perform general interior custodial duties as assigned by department head
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid driver’s license and meet all district requirements for driving school vehicles
Background in completing tasks in mechanics, irrigation, metal‑work (welding), landscaping, and turf maintenance
Experience operating and performing servicing and minor maintenance on grounds and farm equipment
Knowledge of landscaping/grounds material, tools, and equipment
Knowledge of operation and maintenance of motorized equipment used in grounds maintenance work
Knowledge of safety procedures, methods, supplies, and tools used in planting, cultivating, and caring for turf grasses, shrubs, and trees
Knowledge of soil preparation
Able to perform work alone, occasionally at elevated height, use pesticides, work with people, use a motor vehicle on district grounds, use moving and vibrating equipment, work in adverse weather conditions, extreme cold, heat, wet, dry, humid conditions
Ability to operate and maintain power mowers and other grounds maintenance equipment
Ability to perform grounds maintenance work
Able to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff and others
Able to safely use hand and power tools of landscape and grounds‑keeping work
Able to use motor vehicle (van, tractor, truck, mower etc.)
Able to use personal protective equipment (PPE) and clothing; follow verbal and written directions
Preference for abilities to complete complex tasks in mechanics, irrigation, metal‑work, landscaping, athletic/activity area layout and management
Preference for abilities to perform assigned duties with minimal supervision
Presents neat clean appearance
Work overtime is required
