About the Position

– This is an on‑campus, in‑person position. The Director of Trademarks and Licensing leads strategy, management, and daily operations of SMU’s collegiate trademark licensing program, protecting and promoting the university’s brand. The director serves as the primary campus contact for the use of the university brand on products, services, advertising, sponsorships, affinity programs and enforcement of intellectual property.

Responsibilities

Directly manage all aspects of SMU’s collegiate licensing program, including art approvals, licensee management, retailer liaison, and revenue forecasting.

Collaborate with athletic units to facilitate partnership use of university IP, including sponsors, retailers, NIL opportunities, and the official apparel partner.

Seek out co‑branding opportunities with retailers and licensees to augment revenue streams or enhance the SMU brand and develop an annual plan for proactive revenue growth.

Develop and enforce internal licensing practices and protocols.

Serve as project lead on licensing‑related special projects, including EA Sports products, collectibles, and other unique opportunities.

Coordinate campus travel as required across the Dallas‑Fort Worth region.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s preferred.

Experience: Minimum of five years in collegiate licensing, consumer products retail, sports marketing or related field. Corporate partnership or marketing sponsorship experience preferred. Project management experience desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; ability to build relationships across the university and external partners; strong problem‑solving, organizational, planning and time‑management skills; understanding of trademark laws and basic contracts; negotiation experience; marketing skills; discretion and tact with confidentiality.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Sit for long periods of time.
