Overview The P QS SUBSTATION & METER SUBSTATION Department of the P SUBSTATION & METER Division at Hawaiian Electric Company seeks to fill a single management vacancy at the Professional level. The role will be held at either the Substation Service Engineer or Senior Substation Service Engineer level, depending on the applicant’s qualifications.
Responsibilities – Substation Service Engineer
Provides engineering support for construction and maintenance of transmission and distribution systems.
Available for emergency calls at all times.
Conduct investigations, working with field personnel and equipment manufacturers to resolve problems and participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
Ensures integration of new equipment with proper acceptance testing, training, spares, test equipment, and safety procedures.
Prepares studies and engineering requests to resolve problem areas identified through maintenance and test reports.
Establishes and updates preventative maintenance procedures for new or upgraded equipment, emphasizing personnel safety.
Develops tooling and test equipment requirements, including capital budget requests and cost justification.
Implements environmental assignments such as PCB and SF6 tracking, special test equipment, and project implementation.
Assists the Superintendent with administrative duties—budgets, meetings, reports, training development—and substitutes during vacations.
Participates in company emergency response activities as assigned.
Responsibilities – Senior Substation Service Engineer
Supervises and directs Substation Service Engineers and Predictive Maintenance activities for all substations and assigned vaults.
Leads various committees (SMT, Risk Management, ERP Replacement/Enhancements, Smart Grid Technology, Asset Management, Reliability/Resilience Strategies, Renewable Energy Initiatives).
Consults with manufacturers, engineering, operations, PM, and contractors on equipment design, troubleshooting, performance, and emergency response.
Assists the Superintendent with administrative duties—including budgets, meetings, reports, training development—and substitutes during vacations.
Participates in company emergency response activities as assigned.
Qualifications – Knowledge
Thorough working knowledge of electrical/electronic engineering fundamentals applied to the electric utility industry (BSEE preferred).
Professional Engineer license strongly desirable.
Working knowledge of personal computer systems for spreadsheets, word processing, etc.
Understanding of substation equipment operation and maintenance.
Knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices.
Knowledge of SafeStart principles and best practices (for Senior role), and Predictive Maintenance tools (Partial Discharge, Infrared Thermography, Oil Analysis, Vibration Analysis, Ultrasonic Monitoring).
Knowledge of safety principles and best practices (for Senior role).
Qualifications – Skills
Excellent oral, written, and listening communication skills.
Strong interpersonal and influencing skills.
Ability to remain flexible in a demanding, rapidly changing environment.
Ability to read, interpret, and explain complex equipment instructions.
Analytical, computational, organizational, and conceptual skills for managing projects and programs.
Must hold or qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license and meet the company’s driving position standards.
Qualifications – Experience
5–7 years of experience in operation and maintenance of electrical/electronic systems in an electric utility environment (for Substation Service Engineer).
7–10 years of similar experience (for Senior Substation Service Engineer).
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or equivalent (or relevant experience).
State of Hawaii Professional Engineer License highly desired for both levels.
