Job Loal: Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: San Jose, CA
Workplace Type: On-Site
Duration: 11 months 14 days
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design / PCB Layout Contractor to lead the chassis and mechanical system design of a next-generation datacenter platform. This role combines advanced mechanical engineering expertise with a deep understanding of datacentre infrastructure, driving the end-to-end design and integration of high-density, scalable systems. The ideal candidate will collaborate across electrical, thermal, and manufacturing teams to bring innovative mechanical solutions from concept to production.
Key Responsibilities: Chassis & Enclosure Design
Lead the design of datacenter-grade chassis and subassemblies with a focus on structural integrity, modularity, and manufacturability.
Ensure compliance with rack standards (e.g., 19 EIA-310) and optimize for accessibility, serviceability, and scalability.
Thermal & Airflow Optimization
Design and simulate airflow systems for optimal thermal performance, integrating fans, ducts, baffles, and cooling solutions.
Collaborate on heat sink, heat pipe, and liquid cooling integration, and support CFD simulations and validation testing.
Power & Cable Management
Develop efficient power and signal cable routing layouts and integrate power subsystem components.
Design brackets, supports, and mounting structures for PSUs, connectors, and cable harnesses.
System Integration
Partner with electrical, PCB, and systems teams to define board placement, interface points, and mechanical constraints.
Establish mounting strategies and mechanical interfaces for PCBs, SSDs, fans, and other modules.
Prototyping & Testing
Support rapid prototyping using CNC machining or 3D printing techniques.
Coordinate mechanical validation activities, including vibration, shock, drop, and thermal testing.
Compliance & Documentation
Ensure designs meet regulatory and safety standards (UL, CE, RoHS) and address EMI/EMC shielding.
Maintain accurate 3D CAD models, 2D drawings, and BOMs under strict revision control for fabrication and assembly.
Required Skills & Experience:
Proven experience designing server or datacenter chassis (2U 6U preferred).
Advanced proficiency in CAD tools (SolidWorks, Creo, NX, or equivalent).
Strong background in thermal and structural analysis (CFD, FEA).
Deep familiarity with rack standards, server packaging, and airflow optimization.
Solid knowledge of DFM/DFX, rapid prototyping, and sheet metal fabrication processes.
Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with liquid cooling or other advanced thermal management techniques.
Knowledge of EMC/EMI compliance considerations in mechanical design.
Prior experience in high-density compute, storage, or networking enclosures.
