Job Details

Job Title: Lead Engineer

Location: Bolton

Contract: Permanent

Working pattern: 4 on 4 off, working 6-6 or 7-7

Salary: Up to £60,000

Role Summary The Lead Engineer will direct daily activities of the shift teams engaged on breakdown and preventative maintenance for the plant, maximizing plant reliability, performance, product quality and safety.

Responsibilities

Ensure plant is safe to operate and maintain, and personnel conform to health and safety legislation, policies and standards.

Lead the engineering team to support day-to-day operation by delivering planned and reactive maintenance to achieve engineering KPIs.

Work within the framework of a business-led engineering reliability strategy, effectively using SAP PM and maintaining equipment in line with relevant food safety legislation.

Support recruitment, motivation and development of the engineering team, ensuring they achieve the goals and targets agreed in their role profiles and performance review meetings.

Essential Ingredients (Qualifications)

Structured and practical engineering training (e.g. apprenticeship, HNC, degree).

Knowledge and experience of maintenance in an FMCG environment.

Hands‑Free/Safe food safety systems and legislation knowledge (e.g. PUWER, IOSH).

IT and PC knowledge: able to use widespread functions within relevant software (Office and SAP).

Excellent communication skills, able to develop effective long‑term relationships with key people.

Coaching and mentoring skills, responsible for training and coaching others.

Influencing and negotiating skills, able to negotiate successful deals and develop persuasive arguments.

Analysing and problem‑solving skills, anticipating problems before they occur and finding appropriate solutions.

Project management skills, creating effective plans with milestones, identifying risk, planning contingencies and monitoring progress.

Decision‑making skills, taking account of wider risks and implications.

Understanding of cost base, able to improve profitability and monitor engineering budget.

Leadership skills, inspiring others, dealing effectively with performance issues and creating a sense of trust in the team.
