Controls Field Service Technician - Chicago, IL Our client is an Engineering Design and Commissioning Company that specializes in MEP / Controls and Critical Facilities Design. They provide design, commissioning, consulting and management expertise in the Critical Facilities Space. A fully competent Controls Field Technician applies extensive knowledge of complete Controls and Building automation systems platforms such as EPMS, BAS, and BMS in a data center or industrial environment – testing, operations, programming, integration, implementation, commissioning, and emergency support on critical control systems at customers’ sites within their respective regional area.

They will troubleshoot, install, and upgrade existing automation systems for power and cooling systems in a live, mission‑critical environment; assist with startup, commissioning, and validation procedures; and collaborate with Electrical & Mechanical Engineering, Software Development, Project Management, Construction Contractors, Equipment Vendors, Field Techs, and Site Operations teams to ensure reliability, proper operation, and acceptance of new and modified installations, automations, and software solutions.

Responsibilities:

Direct and monitor subcontractors (onsite and offsite) including scheduling, resource management and coordination of construction and start‑up services as needed.

Install and wire BAS controllers and field devices including low voltage cable terminations.

Coordinate installation of BAS / HVAC Controls Systems.

Plan site activities for your team including organization of job site materials, logistics, inventory, tools storage, and security/access.

Lead installation teams on daily and weekly meetings.

Support the development and execution of additional services through change orders.

Cutover panels and systems in retrofit projects.

Develop and implement Methods of Procedure (MOPs) for site activities.

Provide input to project team on developing RFIs, estimating and takeoffs for proposals.

Perform commissioning‑focused design reviews, prepare commissioning test procedures and reports, coordinate and oversee on‑site testing, startup, commissioning and closeout of BAS / HVAC Controls Systems.

Assist software lead with pre‑functional and functional testing.

Execute troubleshooting of BAS systems including corrective actions.

Participate in commissioning efforts with external stakeholders.

Analyze system operation, work with project team to demonstrate operation and verify consistency with the contracted scope of work.

Perform QA / QC of BAS and integrated systems using BAS software tools.

Provide installation inspections and other closeout duties to ensure customer acceptance.

Provide markups for shop drawings to document as‑built conditions.

Communicate regularly with subcontractors, project managers, clients and commissioning agents on project progress.

Document and track issues and out‑of‑scope efforts.

Operate autonomously in day‑to‑day work with high‑level instruction on projects or assignments.

Discuss with technical support problems related to maintenance or operation of equipment.

Attend project bid walks, engineering surveys, BAS audits, etc.

QA/QC peer reviews for projects which candidate is not the engineer.

Optimize workflow and deliverables by developing templates, standards, automations, etc.

Assist / develop all project communication and reporting, weekly progress reports, etc.

Requirements:

Located in the Pacific Northwest.

Open to traveling to job sites in the region – 75% of the time.

Critical Facilities / Data Center experience a must.

Experience with Distech Controls and Tridium Niagara BAS Platforms highly desirable.

Preferably 3–8+ years experience with BMS / BAS Controls.

Experience with JCI, Metasys, Siemens, Honeywell, Automated Logic or similar systems a plus.

PLC / ALC experience.

Experience with critical HVAC equipment (Chillers, Air Handlers, CRAC / CRAH units, Boilers, etc.).

Knowledge of equipment manufacturer specifications.

Ability to interpret AE construction drawings, BAS shop drawings, manufacturer wiring diagrams, standards documentation, submittals and product data sheets.

Ability to follow company and site safety requirements.

Must complete Field Service Reports and assignments accurately and within a timely manner.

Analyze and prepare documents, reports and correspondence.

Willingness to work nights & weekends when necessary.

MS Office Suite proficiency (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams).

Military experience in Electrical / Mechanical engineering is a huge plus.

Excellent verbal, written communication and customer‑relationship skills.

Ability to work independently, be proactive, resourceful and a good delegator.

Client‑facing experience and ability to serve as primary point of client contact on projects.

Exceptional organizational skills with attention to detail.
