With 45 partnering public schools, K‑12, and our own DY Prep HS School, we help young people pursue higher learning, meaningful careers, and social action. The Position The Director of Finance manages the strategic and operational aspects of the organization’s finances and communicates results, issues, and opportunities to all stakeholders. This person must understand nonprofit finance, accounting, and systems and fiscally manage accounting, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, grants administration, operations, capital spending, and financial reporting. The Director ensures compliance, sound internal controls, and guides DreamYard’s financial future to support its mission. The role reports to the Chief Operating Officer and manages the Junior Accountant.
Responsibilities
Lead annual budgeting and planning processes.
Administer budget implementation for each department and monitor monthly budgets (operations, programs, cash, grants, etc.).
Develop and maintain cash flow projections, closely monitoring cash position.
Prepare financial analysis and reports for the Finance Committee and Board of Directors for quarterly meetings.
Manage all financial, program, and grant accounting; collate financial reporting for all funder segments in collaboration with Development and Program teams.
Analyze and present financial reports accurately and timely; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual statements.
Partner with the financial consultant to provide fiscal oversight.
Facilitate the development of an organization‑wide financial strategy with the COO and consultant.
Develop financial forecasts and lead multi‑year financial planning and contingency scenarios.
Participate in Leadership Team meetings and provide financial leadership aligned with DreamYard’s mission, values, and commitment to racial equity.
Accounting
Oversee all accounting and finance functions, managing the Junior Accountant with accounts payable/receivable, bank reconciliations, and monthly close processes.
Ensure compliance with GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
Financial Operations
Lead annual audit preparation and liaison during audit phases.
Implement financial policies that maintain effective internal control and segregation of duties.
Ensure contract billing and collection schedules are adhered to, supporting operational cash flow.
Standardize, automate, and keep financial systems accurate and accessible in real time; recommend system improvements.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field plus 7–10+ years of nonprofit finance experience, preferably in a grant‑funded environment. CPA a plus.
Commitment to DreamYard’s mission and core values.
Proficiency with Sage Intacct and Excel.
Strong understanding of GAAP, nonprofit financial regulations, and revenue recognition for government and restricted grants.
Demonstrated budgeting, forecasting, analysis, and audit preparation skills in a nonprofit context.
Ability to compile financial statements and provide insights and recommendations.
Experience developing and maintaining internal controls.
Excellent communication skills for conveying complex financial information to non‑financial stakeholders.
Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and time‑management skills.
Leadership and management skills emphasizing listening, collaboration, and communication.
Compensation The Director of Finance is a full‑time hybrid, exempt position with a salary range of $110,000–$125,000, commensurate with experience. DreamYard offers an excellent benefits package and generous paid time off.
