Job Description Position Purpose:

Senior Project Engineer responsible for planning and conducting commissioning of electrical systems. Must be self‑motivated, energetic, with understanding of building electrical design and construction. Experienced in commissioning of electrical systems ranging in size, rating, and complexity. Provides theoretical and practical knowledge in commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical systems and controls. Reviews project information, coordinates and executes daily field activities, maintains documentation, assists the Project Manager with schedule and resource planning, and mentors project engineers. May lead small to medium‑sized projects and contributes to high‑technical assessments.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Commission electrical distribution equipment and related controls, primarily in data center environments, including high voltage and medium voltage systems.

Review system designs for compliance with client facility goals.

Prepare plans and procedures for execution of the commissioning process.

Conduct commissioning activities from design to occupation phase, in accordance with client requirements and industry best practices.

Attend factory testing of equipment and document procedures and results.

Conduct functional testing of equipment.

Perform analysis of test results using instrumentation and prepare reports.

Understand critical power quality requirements and test procedures.

Perform thermographic surveys and analyze results.

Fully document all field procedures including results, issues, and observations via company templates or online applications.

Report on system performance and make technical recommendations on issues.

Work with the Project Manager and project teams to coordinate and execute field activities.

Prepare and provide input on commissioning project documentation and schedules.

Draft comprehensive test procedures for a variety of equipment and systems.

Attend relevant project coordination and schedule meetings as necessary.

May be required to lead commissioning meetings or speak on technical topics.

Assist with submitting and maintaining daily commissioning reports.

Train and guide associate and senior project engineers on roles and responsibilities.

Respond to project team and client inquiries in a professional and timely manner.

Comply with company, client, and project safety requirements.

Be knowledgeable with building equipment, including (but not limited to):

Generator and generator paralleling switchgear

High/medium/low voltage transformer (XFMR)

Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems

Battery systems

High/medium/low voltage switchgear (SWGR)

Low voltage main switchboards (MSB)

PLC control

Automatic and semi‑automatic switching controls

Electrical Power Monitoring System (EPMS)

Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS)

Static Transfer Switch (STS)

Power Distribution Unit (PDU)

Busways

Remote Power Panel (RPP)

Grounding systems

Lighting control systems

Work Environment

Travel nationwide 50%–75% (may increase); occasional higher travel expectations.

Qualifications Education & Experience

BSc/MSc in Electrical Engineering with 5+ years of mission‑critical project experience, or relevant industry experience.

OR minimum 7+ years of experience in commissioning with mission‑critical project experience.

Experience in Mission Critical facility commissioning is essential.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Organized, detail‑oriented, analytical, proactive, problem solver.

Good communication and relationship skills.

Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, work with limited supervision, and manage junior engineers.

Knowledge & experience with ASHRAE or BCxA commissioning guidelines preferred.

Knowledge & experience with InterNational Electrical Testing Association (NETA) test specifications.

Distributed control system experience a plus.

Good understanding of building management systems (BMS) and/or electrical power monitoring system (EPMS).

Deep understanding and application of test instrumentation.

Team player and a “client‑first” mentality.

Required Certification / Licenses / Training

Professional Engineer (PE) license and/or a commissioning certification a plus but not required.

Physical Requirements

Ability to walk up to 5 miles per day.

Carry up to 50 lbs.

Ability to wear required PPE daily.
