Position Summary

Perform complex and difficult maintenance and repair work of mechanical engines and equipment including internal combustion equipment and diesel systems; perform diagnostic activities for electronic fuel systems and electronic computer-controlled systems and maintain and repair a variety of equipment as assigned.

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED supplemented by two (2) years technical training in automotive maintenance and mechanical repair;

and Three (3) years of experience in minor and major automotive maintenance and mechanical repair of a variety of vehicles and equipment.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire. Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire. Possession of an AC recovery, CNG fuel and brake repair certificate within six (6) months from date of hire. Preferred Knowledge

Methods and techniques of mechanical inspection, maintenance and repair of internal combustion and diesel engines Operational characteristics of automotive and heavy equipment Operational characteristics of electronic fuel and computer-controlled systems Operational characteristics of electrical and hydraulic systems Methods, equipment and materials used in the overhaul, repair and maintenance of automobiles, buses and heavy equipment Occupational hazards and standard safety practices Process and principals of Brake repair Preferred Skills & Abilities

Perform the most complex and difficult mechanical maintenance and repair work Operate a variety of automotive and mechanical repair equipment and machines relative to assigned area of responsibility Diagnose problems and repair automotive, hydraulic, fire apparatus and/or other mechanical equipment Perform minor adjustments to gas and diesel engines Perform major and minor tune-ups Perform the most complex diagnostic and repair services Repair electronic components Work independently in the absence of supervision Understand and follow oral and written instructions Communicate clearly and concisely Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
