Job Description

In collaboration with anesthesiologists, surgeons and other physicians to deliver anesthesia for medical and surgical procedures, the CRNA has a strong focus on safe patient care and upholds the mission of the Connecticut Children's. Cultivates a patient centric environment which focuses on the whole individual inclusive of physical, psychosocial, spiritual and functional needs of the patient, family, and significant others. Serves as the focal professional for the continuity of care in patient care within scope of practice standards, as well as specialty specific standards to address and resolve problems that may arise. Depending on clinical needs, the position may be required to work night and weekend shifts.

Responsibilities

Assess and evaluate all patients according to their specific age development stage and diagnosis. Recommends, requests, and evaluates pertinent diagnostic studies and documents pre-anesthetic evaluation. Educate patients about surgery, recovery and obtains informed consent for anesthesia. Selects and/or administers pre-anesthetic medications. Prepares operating room; sets up and checks anesthesia machine, supplies, medications and gases. Prepares additional equipment as needed. Selects, prepares and administers anesthetic agents or other agents administered in management of anesthetic care. Informs anesthesiologist and/or surgeon of changes in patient's condition. Provides anesthesia induction, maintenance, emergence, and post anesthesia care. Provides perianesthetic invasive and non-invasive monitoring utilizing current standards and techniques. Responds to abnormal findings with corrective action. Recognizes and treats cardiac dysrhythmias through use of perianesthetic electrocardiogram monitoring. Evaluates patient response during emergence from anesthesia. Institutes pharmacological or supportive treatment to insure adequacy of patient recovery from anesthesia and adjuvant drugs. Provides post anesthesia follow-up, report, and evaluation of patient's response to anesthesia and for potential anesthetic complication. Identifies and manages emergency situations. Initiates or participates in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Performs or orders equipment safety checks as needed. Perform other duties as assigned Qualifications

Education and/or Experience Required:

A baccalaureate or graduate degree in nursing. Graduation from a nurse anesthesia educational program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs. No experience required. License and/or Certification Required:

License as a Registered Nurse in the state of Connecticut. Specialty license as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in the state of Connecticut. Certification or Recertification by The National Board on Certification of Nurse Anesthesia, NBCRNA. PALS.
