Overview

Equipment Operator (Heavy Equipment) – City of San Antonio. Under immediate supervision, responsible for operating light to heavy equipment to excavate, load, transfer, or move dirt, gravel, or other material in maintenance or construction of parks, streets, and public properties. May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff.

Work Location: Ron Darner Headquarters – 5800 Enrique M Barrera Parkway, San Antonio, TX 78227

Work Schedule: 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM Monday – Friday; occasional holidays and weekends.

Essential Job Functions

  • Operate a 10‑cubic‑yard or less dump truck to and from work locations, construction sites, etc.
  • Perform minor maintenance and service checks on equipment.
  • Perform unskilled and semi‑skilled labor related to various maintenance and construction activities.
  • May prepare a daily log of activities.
  • Clean and remove debris from streets, parks, drainage, ditches, city parks, and other areas, frequently lifting materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Remove brush and trash from drainage inlets.
  • Transport tools and equipment to and from work sites.
  • May assist in placement of barricades, signs, flashers, and safety cones.
  • Perform related duties and fulfill responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • One year of experience operating light, medium, or heavy equipment or completion of SA: Ready to Work CDL training program.
  • Must obtain a valid Texas Commercial Class "B" Driver’s License plus required endorsements within six months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid Texas Commercial Class B driver’s license.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to read and write English.
  • One or more years operating backhoes, trenchers, and skid loaders.
  • Experience applying asphalt paving.
  • Ability to assist with trades division tasks.
  • Familiarity with SAP/CRM work order system.

Applicant Information

Applicants may substitute two years of related full‑time experience for one year of higher education or a year of higher education for two years of experience, as described in the job requirements. Applicants selected for employment must pass pre‑employment drug testing, background checks, and, if required, a DOT physical examination. Provide official transcripts, diplomas, DD214 for military service claims, or other documentation as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of operating characteristics, safety procedures, and preventive maintenance for equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic construction methods and practices.
  • Ability to learn proper operating procedures, methods, and practices.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Ability to follow instructions, communicate clearly, and perform all required physical tasks with accommodations as needed.
