Job Description
Position Summary: The Heavy Equipment Operator is an entry‑level position in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical transmission systems. This position works at various locations and may require travel to other states depending on customer demands.
Responsibilities
- Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de‑energized overhead systems.
- String overhead wire, set poles, and install and therecharge transformers, lightning arrestors, cutouts, crossarms, insulators, switches, and switchgear.
- Assist in replacing fuses in transformers and clearing faulted circuits and systems.
- Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order.
- Perform rigorous physical labor as required.
- Operate company radio and heavy equipment safely.
- Apply basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying techniques.
- Use hand tools correctly and maintain them.
- Follow directions and learn basic line work materials.
- Identify primary and secondary voltage on circuits and understand induced voltage.
- Assist with single‑phase transformer installation and hook‑up.
- Perform basic bucket rescue/escape procedures.
- Set up equipment, ground systems, and work at heights or in confined spaces.
- Apply minimum approach distance and flag/tag procedures.
- Install and remove service equipment and inspect rubber goods and PPE.
- Use Kellum grips and hand lines appropriately.
- Work outdoors in inclement weather and glove/ work high‑voltage transmission lines.
- Perform other related duties as required to complete the job.
Minimum Requirements
- 1–2 years of relevant experience.
- Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain a CDL within 60 days of employment.
- Willingness to travel long distances on short notice.
- Willingness to work extended periods onsite when required.
- Capacity to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
- Compliance with inspection of rubber goods and PPE.
- Openness to overtime and work outside normal hours, including weekends, holidays, and overtime.
Physical Demands
Regularly required to talk or hear, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle and feel, and reach with hands and arms. Lifting heavy tools and equipment, enduring outdoor weather, and standing for extended periods are common tasks.
Work Environment
Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibration, and extreme weather conditions at construction job sites. Noise levels can be loud. Work is performed outdoors and may involve significant weather exposure.
