Position Overview

Heavy Equipment Operator (Landfill Site)

Experience Required: 2 Years

Education Required: HS Graduate or Equivalent

Essential Functions

• Perform pre‑operation inspections of equipment, identifying equipment issues and reporting issues to the Lead Mechanic for repair.
• Refuel equipment and add fluids as needed.
• Ensure compliance with company policies, safety and maintenance procedures.
• Operate heavy equipment such as scrapers, wheel type or crawler tractors with dozer blade, compactors, roll‑off refuse trucks, loaders, motor graders and pneumatic tire scrapers.
• Compile daily equipment reports consisting of logging the number of loads excavated and the number of hours spent operating equipment.
• Control well fires by smothering them with dirt, isolating them and/or wetting them with water.
• Communicate with dispatchers concerning delays, unsafe conditions, accidents and equipment breakdowns.
• Keep informed of the weather conditions.
• Demonstrate continuous efforts to improve operation, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
• Work closely with traffic control spotters to identify fill areas to be used for dumping solid waste.

Equipment and Tools Used

Trucks, scrapers, wheel type or crawler tractors with dozer blade, excavators, rock truck landfill blade or bucket attachment, compactors, roll‑off refuse trucks, loaders, motor graders and pneumatic tire scrapers, seat belts, vehicle inspection equipment. Loader and truck driving experience is required.

Protective Clothing & Equipment Used

Steel‑toe boots; hard hat, safety glasses, ear plugs and uniforms/overalls.

Special Skills, Education or Licensure Required

• Driver must meet Motor Vehicle Records standards set by company.
• Driver may possess a CDL.

Work Environment

• Primary work location: Southern Alleghenies Landfill, with potential to travel to other sites a few weeks per quarter (Sandy Run Landfill, Mountainview Landfill, Chestnut Valley Landfill).
• Exposure to outdoor elements.
• Small cramped space such as equipment cab.
• Exposure to dust.
• May work on uneven ground.
• Exposure to high/low temperatures with sudden temperature changes.
• May experience wet weather, snow or high humidity.
• May work at heights of greater than 10 feet.

Typical Physical Demands

• Ability to carry, push and pull up to 75 lbs.
• Ability to climb, kneel or crawl.
• Ability to reach, twist and turn while driving.
• Ability to make continuous arm and hand movements to direct traffic.
