Ideal Candidate Statement The ideal candidate for Light Rail Track Maintenance Supervisor is an experienced track maintenance professional with at least six years of progressively responsible experience, including supervisory responsibilities. They are skilled in inspection, repair, and preventative maintenance of electrified rail systems and excel at leading teams to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable track operations. Strong problem‑solving, communication, and organizational abilities allow them to effectively manage resources, coordinate with stakeholders, and respond to operational needs 24/7.

What You’ll Be Doing Under general supervision, the Light Rail Track Maintenance Supervisor supervises and coordinates the track maintenance and repair of the light rail system. This is the first full supervisory level in the maintenance and repair of the track system. The next higher class, Light Rail Way, Power & Signal Superintendent, manages the overall activities of the program and supervises this class.

About Way, Power & Signal Maintenance Way, Power & Signal Maintenance is located at the Zanker Building. It is responsible for timely and reliable maintenance, preventive maintenance, inspections, repair and servicing of the light rail right‑of‑way, rail system power, tracks, signals, station facilities and related equipment. Key components include:

Station & Wayside Maintenance – maintains and repairs light rail stations and surrounding infrastructure.

Track Maintenance – performs preventive maintenance, inspections, and repair of rail, switches, ties, and roadbed.

Power Maintenance – inspects and repairs light rail electric power systems.

Signal Maintenance – maintains signal systems and related equipment.

Passenger Facilities Maintenance – maintains passenger facilities and related services.

Typical Tasks

Plan, schedule, and supervise inspection, maintenance, and repair of roadbed and track systems.

Coordinate with personnel to maintain safety and operations.

Supervise inspection, maintenance, and repair of rail, switches, ties, and roadbeds.

Inventory rail hardware and place replacement orders.

Operate hi‑rail vehicle for daily inspections.

Assist in re‑railing and loading equipment.

Hire, train, counsel, and discipline workers.

Perform safety training and supervise safe work practices.

Represent VTA at disciplinary hearings.

Serve as department representative with other VTA departments and outside agencies.

Respond to calls 24/7.

Estimate labor, time, costs, and materials.

Prepare written reports, document defects, and maintain records.

Perform related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Six (6) years of experience in track maintenance and repair, including one (1) year in a supervisory position.

Valid California Class C driver’s license and ability to qualify for and maintain a Class B license.

Knowledge of methods and procedures for repairing and maintaining electrified track systems.

Understanding of safety rules and hazardous materials handling.

Proficiency with common office equipment and software.

Ability to read blueprints and schematics, estimate costs, evaluate cost‑effective methods, and prepare reports.

Remuneration Salary is $80,000.00–$90,000.00 annually. Members of the PERS plan receive a pension contribution of 2% at age 55.
