Overview Riverfront Recapture seeks an entrepreneurial Director of Finance to lead day-to-day accounting, manage long-term financial planning, and support human resources. The Director will lead a comprehensive finance program, including bookkeeping, mark-to-market accounting, endowment and grant accounting, contract administration, banking, investment portfolio management, risk management and insurance, and human resources. The Director will assess the financial viability of prospective programs and identify opportunities to maximize revenue generation through events, programs, and other initiatives. The Director will also be involved in the management of the 401k plan. The organization is located in Hartford, Connecticut, with in-person employment.

About the Organization Riverfront Recapture manages, maintains, operates, and activates four riverfront parks and their connected riverwalks and trails. The mission is to connect people with the Connecticut River. In 2024, the organization welcomed 945,000 visitors from the region and supported 452 acres of public green space and 178 free public events. A master plan for a new 60-acre park is underway to transform riverfront land into a thriving, resilient community space.

Responsibilities

Lead day-to-day accounting, reporting, and budgetary responsibilities supporting a $3.5 million operating budget and approximately $5,000,000 in invested assets.

Manage long-term financial planning, cash flow, receivables, and grant compliance with state and federal requirements.

Oversee bookkeeping, accounting systems, fund accounting (including endowment and grants), and contract administration.

Manage banking relationships, investment portfolio, and risk management/insurance programs.

Collaborate with staff to develop and manage the annual budget; assess financial viability of prospective programs and opportunities to maximize revenue.

Support human resources activities, including management of employee benefits, personnel files, policy creation, and retirement plan management (401k).

Oversee and ensure compliance with applicable grant funding requirements and reporting.

Qualifications

Experience leading nonprofit finance operations, including accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting.

Strong knowledge of grant accounting, endowments, and contract administration.

Experience with cash flow management, banking relationships, and investment oversight.

Ability to assess program viability and identify revenue opportunities; strategic thinker with entrepreneurial mindset.

Experience in human resources administration, including employee benefits and retirement plan management.

Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work with staff and leadership.
