Summary: The phlebotomist obtains blood specimens from patients by venipuncture and, after additional training, may perform skin puncture on neonates, children, and adolescents. The phlebotomist serves as a liaison between physicians and Rush Medical Laboratories, collecting specimens for routine, timed, and STAT collections. The phlebotomist interacts with physicians, nurses, laboratory personnel, and other health-care team members. Helps others complete work when time permits. Reports back to the laboratory for further assignment when current work is complete. Verifies patient identification and labels specimens according to SOP at all times. Collects specimens according to laboratory requirements using proper phlebotomy technique; ensures timely collections including timed and STAT as required. Maintains positive working relationships and supports team members. Acts as a resource for technical questions and provides guidance as needed. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of phlebotomy tasks (timed collections, site selection, order of draw, scheduling, and ordering of collections). Attends and documents required continuing education. Trains students and new employees; completes training checklists within established deadlines. Maintains organized work area and phlebotomy cart; stocks and replenishes supplies as needed. Notifies appropriate personnel of problems or unusual situations (e.g., missed collections, patient unavailability) and seeks resolution before escalating. Performs LIS order entry and double-checks orders against requisitions to minimize errors. Performs specimen accessioning and processing; advises physicians on ordering and scheduling in the Clinical Provider Order Entry (CPOE) system. Documents missed or delayed draws and communicates collection status to the team. Participates in special projects or events (e.g., health screenings, training classes) and gathers data to address recurrent problems. Serves as “tech-in-charge” for specified periods, overseeing operations per departmental guidelines and deferring issues appropriately when needed. Required Job Qualifications: High school graduate. Good interpersonal and communication skills. Preferred Job Qualifications: National Phlebotomy Association or equivalent certification. Two years of phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting. Physical Demands
Works throughout the Medical Center’s patient care areas and laboratories. Frequent exposure to potentially infectious diseases and body fluids. Requires bending, standing, and walking for the majority of the workday. Additional Information
