POSITION SUMMARY The Nocturnist Advanced Practice Provider (APP) functions as part of the Hunt Regional Hospitalist team, providing overnight coverage for hospitalized patients. This role includes managing calls for patients admitted under the Hospitalist service, completing new overnight surgical admissions, and providing care for patients admitted under surgical services until morning handoff. The APP performs these functions under the general supervision of a licensed physician in accordance with Hunt Regional Healthcare policies and state regulations.

The Nocturnist APP ensures timely and effective patient care throughout the night, facilitates communication between nursing staff and the attending physician team, and contributes to continuity and safety of care during off-hours. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Reports To: VP of Quality/Coordinated Care Collaborates closely with the Hospitalist Medical Director Supervises: None POSITION REQUIREMENTS Minimum Education: Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program Minimum Work Experience: Previous inpatient or acute care experience preferred Required Licenses/Certifications: Current and unrestricted Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license Current or eligible for Texas Pharmacy and DEA License Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills, particularly in acute and emergent situations Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with nursing, surgical, and hospitalist teams Proficiency with EHR systems (Cerner preferred) and electronic documentation Demonstrated ability to manage multiple patients efficiently during overnight hours Commitment to providing compassionate and evidence-based patient care PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Must be able to work 12-hour overnight shifts to meet the demands of the position May be exposed to communicable diseases or combative patients Must be able to read medical records and document in an electronic system Must be able to perform clinical duties requiring extended periods of standing or walking JOB-SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS 1. Provides overnight coverage for patients admitted under Hospitalist services, managing all incoming calls and clinical concerns. 2. Completes and documents new overnight admissions for surgical patients in coordination with the admitting surgeon. 3. Provides interim management for surgical service patients until morning handoff to the primary surgical team. 4. Evaluates, diagnoses, and manages acute changes in condition for hospitalized patients. 5. Orders and interprets diagnostic tests and prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions. 6. Maintains detailed and accurate documentation of all assessments, interventions, and communications. 7. Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members, including nursing, surgical, and ancillary staff, to ensure safe and efficient care transitions. 8. Communicates significant overnight events to the incoming daytime hospitalist and surgical teams during handoff. 9. Adheres to Hunt Regional Healthcares Compliance Plan and Code of Conduct, maintaining confidentiality and professionalism at all times. 10. Participates in ongoing education, competency validation, and quality improvement initiatives related to hospital medicine.
