Overview
LNG Principal Instrument and Control Systems Operations Engineer. The Principal Electrical Instrument and Control Systems (ICS) Operations Engineer is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on the LNG Operations Service Team providing technical expertise to Sempra Infrastructure's operating facilities and those under development. The ICS SME supports, assists, measures, troubleshoots, improves, and develops solutions to enable Operational Excellence across Sempra Infrastructure's LNG assets. This role requires understanding the integrated LNG liquefaction value chain and navigating facility constraints within a customer-driven shared services organization supporting the commercial goals of a world-class LNG export operation. Lead and provide expertise for all Instrument and Control Systems matters for the Owner. Serve as a technical ICS Engineer expert resource to operating facilities and Sempra Infrastructure management. Maintain, upgrade, and improve the OTS; observe facilities, provide insights, and develop/implement solutions to problems. Review, troubleshoot, and develop strategies for Historian and HMI systems. Evaluate, review, and troubleshoot complex architectures of DCS, PLC, and other control systems. Evaluate and provide expertise in hazard detection systems, including fire and gas; specify and troubleshoot field devices interfacing with control systems, especially for rotating equipment including turbine systems. Evaluate, troubleshoot, and specify security access and monitoring systems (intrusion detection, CCTV, gate access, visitor access). Troubleshoot outlier events including spurious trips and alarms; enable uninterrupted safety, reliability, and production during software upgrades and patches by establishing risk-based practices and communicating risks to plant management. Provide technical training support for operations, including upgrades and improvements to the OTS, maintenance related to ICS, telecommunications, and security systems. Review and audit P&IDs, hazard detection systems, DCS/PLC architectures, instrument location plans, instrument hookup, installation details, instrument index, logic diagrams, loop/wiring drawings, instrumentation datasheets, cause-and-effect diagrams, and sizing calculations. Monitor and identify cybersecurity risks; understand UPS control systems, their capabilities, and failure mechanisms. Plan and implement technical training for ICS, telecommunications, and security systems; champion best practices across facilities, including safe work practices (LOTO & MOC); develop and manage scopes of work for technical studies. Assist in the development of Sempra Infrastructure LNG assets; participate on PHA teams. Perform other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties). Requirements
Education Bachelor’s degree in Instrument Engineering, Control Systems/Automation and/or Electrical Engineering. Master’s degree is a plus. Experience 12+ years in the petrochemical industry, with at least 4 years as a specialist with Instrument and Control Systems equipment for large machinery. 10+ years of plant environment experience preferred. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Understanding of industry trade groups, events, and trends affecting Sempra Infrastructure LNG assets; knowledge of industry codes (IEEE, IEC, NFPA, ASTM) and regulations (FERC, PHMSA) and standards; ability to advise on applicability. Understanding of LNG facility operational and commercial aspects; knowledge of construction techniques in energy/natural gas/petroleum industries. Ability to manage multiple projects, work independently, and mentor less experienced engineers. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Other Qualifications Ability to travel to facilities outside the United States.
