Position Summary Provides services as a Public Safety Officer within BMC Department of Public Safety to provide police, security, parking, transportation and control center services as necessary. Ensures consistent and safe service delivery throughout the medical center involving all members’ institutions. Utilizes the medical center’s core values as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the medical center’s mission.
Essential Responsibilities / Duties
Performs daily Operational Functions upon request by the Public Safety Supervisor or the Public Safety Desk Officer to ensure that BMC’s operational needs are met in as efficient a manner as possible.
Responds immediately and appropriately to all stat requests for assistance issued by the Public Safety Desk Officer.
Responds immediately and appropriately to all emergency, contingency, or disaster situations.
Responds as soon as possible to all calls assigned by the Public Safety Desk Officer.
Documents all incidents responded to and informs Public Safety Desk Officer of all actions taken.
Completes incident reports in an objective, clear and legible manner and submits all documentation to the Public Safety Desk Officer prior to departing from BMC at the end of the shift.
Utilizes strong customer service skills and community policing philosophies to develop and build relationships with the community served.
Manage complex, dynamic and emotionally charged situations to restore order and address safety, security or police needs.
Investigates reports of suspicious activity, hazards or risk and mitigates risk to patients, visitors and staff.
Investigates reports of nefarious or criminal activity and take appropriate actions to protect and process evidence, interview witnesses and document findings.
Take appropriate police actions when necessary, based on training and legal requirements.
Use de-escalation techniques when addressing disorderly or emotionally charged individuals.
Provide escorts to patients, visitors, employees, staff and students to ensure safety in accordance with BMC policies.
Provide cash transfer escorts upon request.
Patrol BMC property and grounds, document deficiencies and violations of policy.
Ensure authorized vehicle access to parking areas and document parking policy violations.
Provide Access Control to ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
Ensure employees have proper identification and identify individuals without visible ID in a courteous manner.
Enforce policies regarding age of visitors and restricted areas; ensure vendor representatives are identified and have appropriate passes.
Inspect outgoing materials to ensure only authorized items leave the property.
Restrict access to individuals with no authorized business within BMC or specific areas as per policy.
Provide information to patients, visitors, employees, staff and students in a friendly and helpful manner.
Perform Public Safety Desk Officer duties as assigned to ensure efficient department operations.
Coordinate Public Safety, Parking and Transportation Services during non-business hours and act as liaison with other departments and external agencies.
Prioritize and assign incident responses and requests for assistance; ensure timely resolution.
Maintain chain of custody for property, evidence and equipment at the main Public Safety desk.
Monitor electronic security systems and escalate system failures as needed.
Education
HS Diploma required; A.S. in Criminal Justice or equivalent preferred
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required
CPR certification
Must possess and maintain the ability to legally operate a motor vehicle in the state of Massachusetts
Experience
6 months to 1-year preferred Security and Customer Service Experience

Compensation Range
$27.77 - $28.32
