Overview
Associate Engineering Technician/Senior Engineering Technician (Cascade) – City of San José. The Department of Public Works seeks candidates to fill multiple Associate and Senior Engineering Technician positions in the Facilities and Transportation and Hydraulic Services Divisions. Position Duties
The Department of Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating, and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services. The department is committed to high-quality service, partnering with the community, and providing an excellent environment in which to work.
Development Services (DS) provides permitting services for development projects and reviews plans and issues permits for utility infrastructure and encroachment on City streets. This division also handles programs including storm water control, flood hazard zones, geologic hazard zones, grading and erosion control, mapping, street and easement vacation, and transportation and traffic analysis.
Facilities Management delivers facilities maintenance, repairs, and support services for capital projects across City-owned facilities and infrastructure, including Emergency Interim Housing facilities, Libraries, Community Centers, Fire facilities, Police facilities, and other public facilities.
Transportation and Hydraulic Services (THS) designs, constructs, and masters plans bridges, culverts, streets, sidewalks, storm and sanitary sewers, pump stations, streetlights, landscape and hardscape improvements, traffic signals, and supports upgrades and revitalization of the San Jose-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility.
Salary
– The total salary range for Associate Engineering Technician is $88,015.20 – $107,103.36. The total salary range for Senior Engineering Technician is $96,576.48 – $117,455.52. These ranges include an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Final salary determined by qualifications and experience.

Minimum Qualifications ASSOCIATE ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN
Education:
Completion of high school, or equivalent (GED or California Proficiency Certificate).
Experience:
Four (4) years of increasingly responsible sub-professional engineering/technical support experience, including two (2) years of experience in materials sampling and testing, drafting and developing plans and specifications, construction or infrastructure inspections, traffic engineering, or field surveying.
Acceptable Substitutions:
Two academic years or sixty (60) semester units of college-level engineering technology courses or related field may substitute for two (2) of the four (4) years of experience. There is no substitution for the two (2) years of experience listed above.
Required Licensing:
Possession of a valid State of California driver’s license.
SENIOR ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN
Education:
Completion of high school, or equivalent (GED or California Proficiency Certificate).
Experience:
Six (6) years of increasingly responsible sub-professional engineering/technical support experience, including two (2) years of experience in preparing engineering drawings, contract specifications, and cost estimates; drafting and structural detailing for final plans; construction or infrastructure inspection; or field surveying.
Acceptable Substitutions:
Two academic years or sixty (60) semester units may substitute for two (2) of the four (4) years of experience, with no substitution for the two (2) years listed for drawings, specifications, cost estimates, or structural detailing.
Required Licensing:
Possession of a valid State of California driver’s license.
