Director of Design-Build Program (Lecturer Calendar Year)
Position title: Director of Design-Build Program (Lecturer Calendar Year) at University of Massachusetts Amherst.
The Building and Construction Technology Program (in the Department of Environmental Conservation) and the Department of Architecture at UMass Amherst invite applications for a full-time lecturer position to be the director and primary instructor for the UMass DesignBuild program. The successful candidate will provide the core organizational, administrative, and instructional leadership for a service-learning DesignBuild program that allows students from multiple disciplines to construct a small house or other project each year for a local community partner or the University. This is a calendar year Lecturer (100% appointment, 12 months), jointly appointed between the Department of Environmental Conservation (primary) and the Department of Architecture (secondary).
Initial appointment is two years and renewable based on performance and program need. The successful candidate will be a core faculty member of the Building and Construction Technology (BCT) Program in ECO and the Department of Architecture, and will engage with other academic units and industry partners. We value faculty-student interaction, teaching, and mentoring, and provide access to mentoring opportunities across colleges and university programs.
The expected start date is September 1, 2026.
Essential Functions
Teaching Duties:
Spring: teach a 6-credit undergraduate/graduate DesignBuild design studio leading to construction documents for an upcoming project. Summer: teach two 6-credit DesignBuild build courses. Fall: teach BCT 313 (3 credits) on light-frame, residential construction, which may coincide with design/build project duties.
Service Duties
Construction Management Duties : Perform tasks for the successful construction of the DesignBuild project, including site preparation, procurement of materials and equipment, instruction of students on construction procedures and safety, and coordination with code officials, municipal authorities, contractors, and suppliers. Ensure delivery to the community partner at project completion.
Program Management Duties : Manage the UMass DesignBuild program, including project solicitation and procurement, negotiations and agreements with partners, fundraising, overseeing program finances, interfacing with university offices, coordinating with legal, recruiting students, and outreach to media, donors, town officials, and professionals. Oversee campus site supervision and maintenance of the program site.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness, in alignment with the university’s strategic priorities and experiential learning goals. Additional duties may be assigned to support the College of Natural Sciences and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Other Functions
Collaborate to promote teamwork, equality, and inclusiveness across the CNS and campus.
Support the dean’s strategic priorities and other duties as assigned in support of the college mission.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., architecture, building science, construction technology, construction management, civil engineering, or similar).
Construction Supervisor License (CSL) in Massachusetts or equivalent (by time of hire).
OSHA 10 Safety Certification (by time of hire).
Previous onsite experience in light-frame construction.
Previous teaching experience in construction and/or design programs.
Preferred Qualifications
Architect license in Massachusetts (by time of hire).
OSHA 30 safety certification.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions All work on the DesignBuild site occurs in a construction environment. The candidate must be comfortable in that environment and able to perform reasonable physical duties.
Salary Information The expected salary range for this position is $80,117.00 to $118,067.00.
