Overview
Senior Employee and Labor Relations Specialist (Remote) – Senior subject matter expert and strategic partner to leadership within the entity they support. Leads the resolution of complex employee and labor relations issues, advises on organizational risk and strategy, and supports collective bargaining and labor-management relations. This is an individual contributor role that may delegate and oversee the work of the Employee & Labor Relations Specialist. Requires deep knowledge of employment and labor laws (e.g., FMLA, ADA, NLRA) and healthcare-specific regulations (e.g., HIPAA, Joint Commission standards). Job Description
The Senior Employee & Labor Relations Specialist provides leadership in resolving complex employee and labor relations challenges across multi-disciplinary clinical and non-clinical staff, including shift-based teams in both unionized and non-unionized environments. Maintains a fair, respectful, and legally compliant workplace culture and supports related HR program design and policy development. Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Management, or related field. Seven (7) years of experience in Human Resources, Employee Relations, and Labor Relations. Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree (e.g., Master’s, JD) in Human Resources, Labor Relations, Business Administration, or related field. Ten (10) years of experience in Human Resources, Employee Relations, and Labor Relations. Certification in Human Resources. Process improvement certification (e.g., Six Sigma). Duties and Responsibilities
Provide strategic guidance, advice, and direction to leaders to resolve complex employee/labor relations issues, including discipline/corrective action, employee appeals, and the grievance process. Develop and modify Employee Relations communication programs; advise Leaders to enhance effective communication. Lead, manage, and advise on routine internal investigations into misconduct, attendance, behavioral matters, and policy violations; prepare investigative reports as needed. Support Workplace Investigation Manager on complex investigations related to discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and other matters. Support administration of Collective Bargaining Agreements and advise leadership on labor relations matters in consultation with the Labor Relations lead. Provide union contract administration, including investigation of grievances, drafting Step 1 grievance responses, and MOA preparation for review by Labor Relations lead. Prepare information for grievance hearings, arbitration, and administrative hearings (e.g., MCAD, unemployment); serve as Tufts’ witness when necessary. Provide direction and support for Leave Administration issues as needed. Collaborate on policy development and with colleagues to plan and organize employee recognition events. Maintain collaborative relationships with peers to support goals and foster a positive work environment. Coach and mentor operational leaders on best practices in employee relations. Build constructive relationships with union representatives and support ongoing labor-management collaboration. Partner with leadership during collective bargaining preparation and negotiations. Monitor emerging legal and regulatory developments impacting employee and labor relations; identify systemic trends and implement proactive solutions. Lead process improvement efforts in investigations, grievance handling, and employee relations practices; secure leadership buy-in for changes. Develop and deliver training for leaders on employee relations, labor relations, investigations, and workplace culture. Mentor Employee & Labor Relations Specialists and other HR team members on related matters. Physical Requirements
Professional office environment with standard equipment; largely sedentary with occasional movement (walking, standing, stairs). Frequent speaking, listening, and information exchange; ability to read computer displays and fine print. Able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds occasionally. Skills & Abilities
Project management capabilities. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, HRIS, and Payroll systems. Deep knowledge of employment law and related regulations (federal/state leave laws, ADA, FLSA, NLRA/NLRB, discrimination laws, JCAHO standards). Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; ability to handle sensitive information. Ability to work independently and as part of a team; strong organizational and prioritization skills; capacity to manage multiple projects with minimal direction. Analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving skills; ability to influence and partner with leaders at all levels. Pay Range
$101,084.26 - $128,878.21 Seniority level
