Stationary Engineer, Water Treatment Plant - San Francisco Water Division (CDD) - SFPUC (7341) Position overview and appointment details are as described in the original job posting. This as-needed 7341 Stationary Engineer is a temporary appointment not to exceed the equivalent of half-time (1040 hours) during any fiscal year. Incumbent should be available to cover any full shift or partial shift on an as-needed basis and may be called on short notice to work weekends, holidays, day, swing, and grave shifts.

APPOINTMENT TYPE:

Temporary Exempt. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.

Role Description Under general supervision and during a shift, the Stationary Engineer, Water Treatment Plant, operates, maintains, and repairs a wide variety of complex machinery and equipment at a pumping station or related facility. Work may include physical effort such as climbing ladders (up to 16 ft.), confined space entry, working in remote areas, and using a respirator. The work environment may be industrial, physically restrictive, and hazardous. The Stationary Engineer must be able to audit alarm screens, identify levels of audible alarms, and identify leaks by smell.

Definition Under general supervision and during a shift, operates, maintains, and repairs a wide variety of complex machinery and equipment in a pumping station or related facility. Class 7341 is the journey level class within the Stationary Engineer, Water Treatment Plant series.

Essential Duties

Operates and maintains a wide variety of chemical feed equipment, pumping, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, process machinery, and radiators. May operate Computerized Building Management Systems or SCADA systems.

Repairs automatic and manually controlled distribution and water treatment equipment including pumps, motors, boilers, compressors, alarm systems, residual chemical analyzers, chemical feeders, and filters; may operate a water treatment and distribution facility safely and efficiently without direct supervision.

Inspects and tests machinery and equipment including fire prevention equipment for safe, efficient operation by visual and audio inspection during walk-throughs.

Makes entries and keeps records on shift operations; collects, compiles, and prepares water quality and operational reports by taking and entering meter readings, water and laboratory analysis readings, and temperatures accurately in writing on operating log sheets.

Receives, records, and stores large amounts of treatment chemicals; may handle hazardous chemicals (e.g., caustic soda and chlorine) in confined areas and must safely handle chemical spills; may include handling and treatment of hazardous waste.

Performs control tests and conducts water quality analysis including pH, conductivity, chlorine demand, caustic soda, and chlorine; calculates and maintains required disinfecting requirements.

Communicates verbally with craft, support, and supervisory personnel.

Responsible for keys, 2-way radios, and monitoring plant and grounds, including public safety.

Performs related duties as required for Class 7341 – Stationary Engineer, Water Treatment Plant.

Education Completion of a state or federally recognized four-year Stationary Engineer apprenticeship program.

Completion of a state or federally recognized four-year Stationary Engineer apprenticeship program.

License And Certification

Possession of a current valid Grade II (or higher) Water Treatment Operator Certificate issued by the State of California.

Possession of a current valid Class C Driver's License.

Substitution Any of the following may substitute for the required education:

Four (4) years journey-level Operator and/or Stationary Engineer experience in maintenance, repair, and operation of pumping and related plant machinery at a water or wastewater treatment plant.

Four (4) years journey-level experience as a Marine Engineer performing duties in the same areas.

Graduation from a recognized four-year Maritime Academy with a degree in Engineering or Technology.

Note

Positions located at the City Distribution Division require incumbents to obtain and maintain a Grade III Water Distribution Operator Certificate within 18 months from date of hire.

Physical requirements include kneeling, crouching, stooping, crawling, climbing, working in lift equipment, and using ladders up to 75 feet, walking long distances, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Work may involve confined spaces, damp environments, inclement weather, and exposure to chemicals.

Drug Testing Requirement Applicants not currently employed in safety-sensitive positions may be required to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. Testing may also occur upon reasonable suspicion or after a work-related accident. A positive pre-employment test may result in a six-month ineligibility for hire in safety-sensitive roles.
