Overview
Assistant Professor - Materials Engineering (AY 26/27). This full-time, academic year, tenure-track faculty position is at the Assistant Professor rank beginning Fall 2026 in the Materials Engineering Department, College of Engineering, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. The department emphasizes a Learn by Doing philosophy, with a teacher-scholar model. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses, support and expand curricular development in Materials and/or Chemical Engineering, engage in high-quality scholarly work with external peer review, and participate in service activities at all levels of the University. Faculty are also expected to advise senior projects in their area of expertise. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Anticipated hiring range: $106,000 - $117,000 per year. Teach undergraduate level courses and contribute to curricular development in Materials and/or Chemical Engineering. Engage in scholarly work of high quality evidenced by external peer review. Perform service activities at all levels of the University. Advise senior projects within area(s) of expertise. Qualifications
An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Materials Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering or closely related field from an accredited institution or international equivalent. Candidates nearing completion (ABD) will be considered if the doctorate is awarded by start of appointment. Demonstrated excellence in teaching, effective communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with students, staff and faculty. Able to develop an externally funded, applied research program involving undergraduate and graduate students and partnerships with key stakeholders. Hands-on, student-centered teaching experience and ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary settings. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated excellence in university-level teaching and research (as appropriate to time since degree). Experience with laboratory-based instruction and/or industry experience. Experience with diverse populations and fostering an inclusive, collaborative environment. Ability to teach courses and advise student projects in areas of need (ceramics and glasses) and/or additional emphasis areas (fundamentals of chemical engineering). Special Conditions
